8 Basic And Inexpensive Ingredients That Are Great For Natural Hair

Ismail oubarka | 4:26 PM

@jasminnextdooorIt’s no secret that natural hair products aren’t always the most inexpensive, and if you’re a product junkie like me, you might as well kiss your hair budget goodbye, because I can never say no to a new natural product. However, I have learned a few ways to save a bit of money on products that Click to continue...

Humidity Chronicles: How I Went To Get Sleek Flat Iron Slayage And Ended Up With a Blow Out

Ismail oubarka | 4:26 PM

@kekecameronA couple of weeks back I shared my hair goals for 2016. Getting my hair straightened was part of the list. I had been wanting to stretch my hair out and see the true length after 2yrs of healthy haircare.  I was going to wait until the end of 2016 but got the crazy idea Click to continue...

9 Genius Natural Hair Hacks

Ismail oubarka | 11:28 AM

I do not know anyone who does not enjoy a good shortcut or trick, especially if it can help your hair regimen. You may be familiar with some of these and not so familiar with others, but here are some natural hair hacks to help when you are in a bind or want to make managing your hair easier.

1. Stocking hair ties
Have an old pair of stockings? Well, slice a piece of those puppies off to make your own very stretchy hair ties. These hair ties are perfect for coarse, dense hair and tighten really nicely.

2. Plastic bag caps
When you are out of a plastic cap and need to deep condition, just grab a plastic grocery bag and tie it around your head. Not only is this a good solution for deep conditioning, you can throw the bag out once your are done without having to clean it.
3. T-shirt drying
Most of us know that towel drying causes frizz, but not t-shirt drying. Use a t-shirt instead if you need to get your hair dried without causing frizz and breakage.

4. Headband as a hair tie
As you hair grows longer it gets harder to use small hair ties and that is where elastic headbands come in. Depending on your preference and your hair, you can choose a headband material that suits you and it will be easier to tightly secure around your hair without slipping and loosing the shape of the ponytail that you want.

5. Wet bun to stretch your hair
I saw this trick from a naturally hair mommy blogger. She did a wash and go on her daughter’s hair and let it air dry for 20 min to an hour. Then, she twisted her hair into a bun so that the curls stretch for at least an hour. Once released, the hair is still wet but the curls are more stretched and dry that way without causing frizz.

6. Rinse in cold water for more shiny hair
Sometimes the simplest tricks are easy to forget. For shinier hair, simply rinse in very cold water. Cold water closes the cuticle and thus leaves you with shinier hair.
7. Detangle with less mess & easy clean up
Cover your sink with saran wrap so that you can easily and quickly clean up when you are done styling your hair. If you ever detangle and wash in the sink it can become a big mess. To avoid this try detangling while in the shower so that the flying conditioner is not all over your bathroom but in your tub to make for easy clean up.

8. Don’t feel sexy in your satin bonnet?
That’s okay you can still wear it, just wrap a more fashionable head wrap around it like you would if you were going out. This hides the hair bonnet but your hair is still protected and you look cute.

9. Rehydrate dry, frizzy hair overnight
I had a wash and go earlier this week but had no time to deep condition, so I doused my dry hair in a conditioner and olive oil mixture, placed it in a high bun, and wrapped it up. I went to sleep (hair did not wet my pillow) and when I awoke my hair was deeply moisturized. To avoid oil dripping on your pillow you can tie a t-shirt around your head and lay a t-shirt over your pillow for additional protection.

What are some of your curly hair hacks?

How to Moisturize and Seal Natural Hair on Wash Day

Ismail oubarka | 11:28 AM

Wash day is never complete without locking in the moisture. There are three ways to seal moisture in your strands after deep conditioning: moisturizers and milks, leave-in conditioners, and oils. You do not have to use them all but here are the differences so you know what will work best for you.
Moisturizers and milks
Moisturizers help to retain moisture between wash days. If you prefer something more lightweight then consider a hair milk. Although most moisturizers are water based, it is best to apply them while the hair is wet so it can retain as much moisture possible, as they are most effective when trapping moisture that is present. These two are chock-full with emollients, humectants, and oils. They are also great options if your hair is protein sensitive.

Leave-in conditioners
Leave-in conditioners contain moisturizing and strengthening properties. According to trichologist Dr. Kari Williams, they are meant to periodically replace your daily conditioner or deep conditioner. If you are in a hurry and do not have time to allow the ingredients in your daily conditioners and deep conditioners to absorb, then use a leave-in conditioner. Note that all leave-in conditioners are not formulated with hydrolyzed proteins, so the bottle may say leave-in conditioner even though it functions more like a moisturizer. Always check the ingredients list.
Oils
Some curlies follow up their conditioner with only oil while others layer oil atop their moisturizer or leave-in conditioner. The practice of using oils after washing your hair is called sealing; this reduces the rate of moisture depletion. People will use oil as a part of their LOC method to prevent dryness, reduce frizz, and stave off wash day. You can use a pure oil or create your own blend.

You do not have to use all of these products but you should use one. I gravitate more toward leave-in conditioners, because they tend to be lightweight, provide great slip, and add moisture and strengthening benefits to my coils. Since my hair is fine, I usually forgo sealing, as my moisturizers and leave-in conditioners tend to be formulated lots of oils and butters. If you have fine strands or looser curls and waves, then a hair milk is a great option for you. Whenever you want a refresher between wash days but don’t care to co-wash, consider fluffing your hair with a little moisturizer to quench your parched ends.

What do you end your wash day with?

Christina's Choice 2015: The Best Deep Conditioners for Natural Hair

Ismail oubarka | 12:21 PM
Christina's Choice 2015: The Best Deep Conditioners for Natural Hair
And the hits don't stop!

Moving right along, let's talk deep conditioners. Of all the categories for Christina's Choice 2015, this was the most difficult to navigate because there are so many good deep conditioners out there. I mean heck, I still roll heavy with many of my picks from 2014. But I had to be honest with myself and admit that I don't keep a bunch of deep conditioners in rotation anymore. Sure, I may reach for them every once and again, and I may like them...a lot. But that doesn't mean they're holy grail status.

They're good, but I don't particularly care to cuddle with them at night.

The three deep conditioners I'm getting ready to share with you? They get all the cuddles.

Let's roll!

Christina's Choice 2015: The Best Deep Conditioners for Natural Hair
tgin Honey Miracle Hair Mask, 12oz/$16
Oh, what say you? You remember Honey Miracle Hair Mask being named as an honorable mention in 2014? Well, you remembered correctly! Honey Miracle Hair Mask got a promotion -- and a well-deserved one, too! My transitioning and "naked" natural hair days had me fiendin' like a fool over the Triple Moisture Replenishing Conditioner (don't worry I still love it...it's just not HG anymore), but with my hair having been colored red at the tail end of 2014, and again to black a few months ago, more moisture was on the menu. Enter: Honey Miracle Hair Mask. Not only do I absolutely love the sweet, floral fragrance, I'm head over heels with the richness and intense moisture it provides. It has amazing slip, and leaves my hair shiny and buttery smooth -- y'all know I live for the buttery smooveness. It sounds like I need to do an updated review on Honey Miracle Hair Mask but in the meantime just know -- it's delicious down to the last drop.

My tgin Review

Soultanicals Afrotastic Curl Elastic, 8oz/$16
I already know what you're thinking.
"How, Sway? How is a deep conditioner I've never seen Christina talk about on Instagram or on the blog, or anything be holy grail? Like, how?!"

I'd now like to take this time to apologize for being a bad blogger. See, what had happened was....lol. But seriously, I've had Afrotastic Curl Elastic since mid-2015, and I've been using it on the low ever so conservatively -- for fear of running out. Luckily for me, a little bit of Afrotastic Curl Elastic goes a long way, so I won't run out before my next order arrives.

Now, let me tell you a little bit about this jar of tropical passionfruit candy scented goodness. Clearly, it smells amazing. But beyond that, it's a nutritional powerhouse for hair that needs a little extra TLC. The water is botanically infused with marshmallow, rosemary, burdock root, amla, sage, and more to strengthen hair at the roots and stimulate growth. Pro Vitamin B5 and Hydrolyzed Jojoba Protein strengthen and fortify the hair, while Ximenia, Olive, and Avocado deeply moisturize and smooth rough cuticles. I'm going to do a full review on Afrotastic Curl Elastic SOON, but in the meantime just know it's 137% fire! You know those deep conditioners where after rinsing your hair, it feels stronger, more fortified, and like it soaked up alllll the goodness? That's my hair on Afrotastic Curl Elastic. My strand feel buttery to boot, and the slip is off the charts! Talk about a win all around! So now you see why it's on my list, right?

Thought so.

Eva NYC Therapy Session Hair Mask, 16.9oz/$15
Two years in a row, baby! Eva NYC Therapy Session was literally love at first jar, and I'm easily about 9 or 10 jars in -- just ask the folks at Ulta in Redondo Beach. I'm still not wild about the fragrance (it gives me powdery grandma teas), but I love it nonetheless. The slip, the buttery smooth realness, and everything else it does for my curls. Plus, the hefty, almost 17oz jar will last you a mighty long time if you use it right. I don't think I need to do much more convincing on this one, I've probably shared more about Therapy Session Hair Mask on the blog and Instagram than I have for any other product (except maybe Bae Clean).

When all is said and done, the "Deserted Island Award" pick goes to..........
Christina's Choice 2015: The Best Deep Conditioners for Natural Hair
"You deserve it..." -Drake #judgemeifyoumust
Why: Yassssssssss! I mean, what?! I told y'all there would be some upsets this year, and here's the first one! The greatness of Afrotastic Curl Elastic is just too much to ignore. It hydrates, foritifies, strengthens, and nourishes in one fell swoop. It gives me buttery smoothness and strength, all in one. Here's how you know I'm for real for serious about Afrotastic Curl Elastic: my re-up order is salon sized. Yes. 33.8oz of curl-loving realness is en route to my doorstep, because it's that good. Oh, and by the way (I'm not getting paid to say this or anything), but if you're interested in trying it out for yourself, Soultanicals is having a 50% off End of the Year Sale on their entire site (use code EOY50 at checkout). I just looked because I was gonna link Afrotastic Curl Elastic for y'all, but it looks like the 8oz, 16oz, and salon size are out of stock. But that proves my point though! This stuff is baaahmb! Plus, there's always Amazon.

2016 Intentions | How to have $10,000 cash, money in the bank!

Ismail oubarka | 6:58 AM
I like to watch reality competition shows.  Every so often, the contestants will be tasked with an interesting and unique challenge.  The game show announcer declares that the winner will receive $10,000 in cash!

Screams are heard from the hopeful contestants as they are filled with emotion at the possibility of earning $10,000.  Some jump up and down, others have tears in their eyes as they describe how their lives would change if they were to receive such a blessing.

I watch what unfolds with mixed feelings.

On one hand, I too would be excited if I received $10,000 for less than an hour of activity.  But, on the other hand, I never want to be in a situation where the only way to receive such an amount of money would be to win on a gameshow.  Yes, $10,000 is a lot of money, but at the same time... it isn't.

Years ago, I set the intension of saving $10,000 cash.  I picked that number because $10,000 was (and still is) a lot of money.  I wanted direct access to $10,000.  I never wanted to be in a situation where I never had five figures in the bank unless I won it on a gameshow.  I needed $10,000 to be normal and accessible.  T Harv Ekar talks about the financial thermostat in his book Secrets of a Millionaire Mind.  This is our self imposed financial comfort level.  The people who started crying at the thought of having $10,000 likely never had that amount of money.  But, on the other end of the financial spectrum are those who've made millions, lost it, and made it back again.  Once you reach a certain financial level, it becomes easy to replicate.

My wish for every single person reading this post is that you have the opportunity to have at least $10,000 in your bank account.  Whenever an emergency situation comes up, you'll be ready.  If your family members need help, you can assist.  If you lose your job, you can continue to pay your bills. If an opportunity to invest comes your way, you can take advantage!  And if you were to lose the $10,000, you'd know how to get back to that level again.  Wouldn't you want that?

Good!  Let's talk about how to do it.

1. Create a system
When I first made the decision to become a deca-thousandaire, I went back to the basics.  The book that taught me was Automatic Millionaire.  I don't think I even finished reading the book before I set up automatic wealth deductions from my paycheck to my savings.   Saving automatically changed my life!   Reaching my goal was way easier than if I had to use discipline to get to the same outcome.

We receive 26 paychecks a year.  If we saved only $200 per paycheck, we'd easily have $10,000 in two years.

"But Nadege.....two years is a long time."

Really?  If you would have started saving $200 a paycheck when North West was born. You'd have $10,000 by now.  That's how fast time goes by.   Even if you don't have and extra $200 to save each paycheck, start with $100 or $150.  As the years go by, you'll get raises and can increase your automatic deductions.  The point is to do it!   If you do nothing else in 2016.  Set an automatic deduction to a savings account and let it work for you.

2. Measure your results
The day I decided to save five figures, I opened up excel and created a spread sheet.  Each month I'd update my net worth tracker by listing my debts and the amount saved.  My favorite thing to do at the end of the month was to look at my numbers.  Chills went up my spine as I watched my net worth rise.  With every thousand dollars saved, I become even more excited about the day when my bank account would reach the magic number.  It was an obsession.

3. Enjoy saving. Hate Debt!
Let's face it, saving multiple thousands of dollars is easier when you don't have a ton of debt.  First and foremost you need to have a reduction plan in place.  At one point I had a car payment that needed addressing. So once I had a small amount saved, I threw all of my money at the stupid car payment until it was out of my life.  Every spare dime I had I allocated towards reducing the loan and I kept a log of how much interest saved as motivation to keep going.

Debt causes your money to leak. Perhaps you could have saved those $10,000 multiple times over if you hadn't been paying on so many credit cards.   Debt is the enemy of your wealth and you must treat it as such.  You can't get comfortable with it. You can't have it lingering around.  It must be dealt with using a high level of urgency.   For help on how to attack your debt, I suggest Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover.

4. Stop thinking $10,000 is a lot of money.
One of the most powerful ways to manifest something in your life is to stop seeing yourself as separate from it.  When you're thinking "$10,000 is a lot of money" you might be falling into  the trap of viewing it as something that's unattainable.  Yes, $10,000 is a decent sum of money, but you've got to start getting comfortable with the idea of having a surplus of $10,000 cash.  It's a new mindset.

When I first began my financial transformation, the first thing I did was to stop flinching every time I saw a price tag of something that seemed expensive.  That doesn't mean I bought the item, it just meant that I couldn't overreact to the cost. This took a lot of work, because I was the cheapest person you know.  But once I stopped gasping for air every time I saw a $100 price tag, my mind and life began to shift.

You have to get comfortable with the notion of having that much money. If you don't, you'll do everything in your power, consciously and subconsciously, to keep yourself at your current financial level.

5.  Get to a milestone then replicate.
To save $10,000 in cash, all you have to do is create a system to save $1,000 in cash. Then replicate.  It's that simple.  If you can save $1,000, you can get to $10,000. It might take a little longer, but it's possible and it's worth it. Sure, thinks will pop up along the way which will cause you to dip into your savings.  But, you'll pay it quickly, then get right back on track towards your $10,000.  One thing I made sure to do was not get upset when a situation came up that required dipping into my savings, instead, I was grateful to have the money available.

Having a cushion of $10,000 makes you feel so amazing.  You can walk into a store and get what you want. But chances are, you'll be wiser with your money because you'll want to maintain that $10,000 threshold.  When you've worked hard to build your savings, you won't be so quick to blow it.   I suspect the game show winners often spend their earnings as quickly as it comes in.

Why, because when you get a lump sum of money, the next thought that appears is: "how am I gonna spend it?"  But when you build up $10,000, the next thought is "how can I get this to $20,000....

And that's when the fun begins.

Christina's Choice 2015: The Best Shampoos and Co-Washes for NaturalHair

Ismail oubarka | 10:59 AM
Christina's Choice 2015 The Best Shampoos and Co-Washes for Natural Hair
Wow, where did 2015 go?!

It seems like the days are moving lightening fast, so let me not delay this any longer! It's that time of the year again folks -- time for Christina's Choice 2015, where I share the absolute BEST of the BEST products that I've used for my natural hair. Over the course of 2015, I've tried a lot of products -- some good, some bad, some stellar, and some that I'm just better off not mentioning.

I've given a lot of positive reviews, but positive does not always equate to holy grail status. The products on this list, and the others that follow are just that -- holy grail status. Because of this HG designation, there's not going to be 10, 8, or even 5 products in each category. Trust me y'all, there ain't that many products out there worthy of the title. Don't let these folk on IG fool you...

But I digress.

This year, I'm also doing something a little different. I'm often asked, "if you had to pick one..." or, "what's your favorite out of all of them?", and I understand the logic. Nobody wants to go buy 18 different products and spend that kind of money. To bury the hatchet for once and for all, in each category I'll be sharing what's called my "Deserted Island Award" pick -- as in, if I was going to be trapped on a deserted island, and could only take ONE product from each category, it would be that one. Hopefully, this helps somebody with their #productjunkie budget!

Without further delay, allow me to introduce to you the best of the absolute best shampoos and co-washes for natural hair!

Christina's Choice 2015 The Best Shampoos and Co-Washes for Natural Hair
The Final Four!
Be Kekoa Be Clair Sulfate Free Clarifying Shampoo, 8oz/$14
Earlier this year, Be Kekoa came in and changed my life. Like, switched my whole wash day mindset up. Up until this year, I was under the impression that wash day would always involve some sort of struggle, or eat away hours from my day. Be Clair completely shifted that expectation, especially when it comes to what a shampoo can do. Be Clair is one of the slippiest shampoos I've ever tried to date. It provides a deep clean, and gives a wonderfully invigorating scalp tingle. Most of all, I love it because it doesn't dry out my hair. When it comes to clarifying shampoos, Be Clair sets the bar. High.

How I Use Be Kekoa Products on Wash Day

tgin Moisture Rich Sulfate Free Shampoo, 14.5oz/$16
tgin's Moisture Rich Sulfate Free Shampoo has made my list 2 years in a row, so you know it's a top contender! This shampoo has, and continues to live up to its name. It's the perfect shampoo if you're one of those naturals who is skeptical or has been burned by shampoos in the past. It doesn't strip or dry the hair out, lathers nicely, and has good slip. I could go on and on about the reasons why tgin's shampoo is here on this list, but after rocking with this product for over 2 years, I think you guys know by now!

tgin Review

Up North Naturals Clean Curls Shampoo, 8oz/$14
Annnnndddddd it looks like we've got a newbie in the category, folks! I got my hands on Up North Naturals products (review coming soon, I promise) on the tail end of 2015, but the Clean Curls Shampoo made SUCH an impression that I had to include it. It's a ridiculously great shampoo, and it's completely natural. Clean Curls is the perfect shampoo for the African Black Soap fanatic, and the natural who insists that shampoos be free of all types of sulfates (even the ones that have been changed/re-named to be less drying). It goes toe-to-toe with Be Clair in terms of slip, and leaves hair clean, shiny, and de-frizzed. Up North Naturals definitely came out the gate with a winning shampoo, and I am a huge fan. It ousted another fave from the list, and rightfully earned its spot at the top!

Be Kekoa Be Clean Cleansing Conditioner, 8oz/$16
Come on y'all, seriously? Did you really think I was gonna make this list and not include Bae Clean? Like, forreal? I'm pretty sure I don't even need to type this paragraph for y'all to understand the love that runs deeeeeeeeeeep for Be Clean Cleansing Conditioner. I love this product so much that I re-named it Bae Clean, without permission of course. It's the yin to my yang, the match to my fuse, the filter to my IG, the prime to my Amazon. Bae Clean is quite literally everything to me. When I said Be Kekoa swooped in and switched up the game, I meant it. If you haven't experienced Bae by now, you're trippin. Like seriously, why are you still even reading right now? Go get you some. It's the slippiest, gentle cleansing-est (while still removing buildup), good smellin', scalp invigorating co-wash I've ever used IN MY LIFE.

Be Kekoa Be Clean Review

And with all of that being said, the Deserted Island Award goes to..... :::drumroll, please:::

Be Kekoa Be Clean Cleansing Conditioner!
Christina's Choice 2015 The Best Shampoos and Co-Washes for Natural Hair
Winner winner chicken dinner!
Why: Truth telling time: ever since Bae Clean strolled into my life around February 2015, I I have not used another co-wash or cleansing conditioner.I've experimented with a few others that companies sent, or that I purchased to test out, and they all disappointed and paled in comparison to what Bae Clean offered. My love for Bae Clean runs deep, so much so that I don't even bother with 8oz bottles (unless I'm traveling). I stay stocked with the salon sized bottles, because it is the ONLY co-wash I use on my curls. When I'm down to my last salon bottle and it's halfway empty, I start having heart palpitations. You can call the Be Kekoa salon and they'll tell you -- Christina will drive to Temecula for some Bae Clean. And then have the nerve to get 3 bottles. You can even ask my sister, I make her get her own. I'm very generous with giving product to friends and family, except when it comes to Bae. I don't play with Bae.

What shampoos and co-washes are winning with you as we go into 2016? Let me know in the comments below!
