Can Wearing Red transform you into an International Woman of Mystery?

Ismail oubarka | 9:13 AM
I own a single red dress.  It's a strapless A-Line dress that I only wear to company Christmas parties.  Definitely a statement piece.  Other than that, there's nothing red in my closet.  Red's just not a color that I think I can pull off.  Something about the color red seemed a bit too intense..too striking.

Perhaps I'm uncomfortable with what Adweek calls "The Red Dress Effect."  A woman in red, according to the article, is viewed as more physically attractive.  This effect is so powerful that the simple act of posting a picture of yourself wearing red on your dating profile pic will cause more potential suitors to click than if you chose to wear another color.
Red loaded with power and femininity. The woman who confidently wears red is completely at ease with who she is and the message of power she broadcasts to those around her.  I've always been a tad bit weary of attracting that much attention.  The red "Christmas" dress gave me first hand experience how others behave when a woman is draped in red.  Last weekend, I wore a bold red lip after being inspired by this post. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a couple of lingering stares and double takes from strangers.  Maybe I'm being paranoid, or perhaps people instinctively have a reaction to a woman who wears one of the most striking of colors.  By the way, this also works the other way around. A man in red is seen as more attractive to female potential suitors.

For years, I've intentionally stayed away from wearing red, but now that I'm more comfortable in my own skin, perhaps I'll incorporate more red accessories into my life.  Maybe a red handbag or a great pair of heels.  Maybe I'll go crazy and purchase another red dress to wear on non-national holidays.

My Eco Styler Gel Contains Triethanolamine, A Possible Carcinogen- Should I Be Worried?

Ismail oubarka | 8:13 AM

blackscientist-1024x512Triethanolamine, or TEA, is an ingredient commonly found in many ethnic hair care products such as hair gels, serums, creams, and leave-in conditioners. It is mostly found in hair gels and creams because its thick and sticky consistency strengthens the hold of the product as well as thickens an otherwise watery substance. 10 Ways To Stop Breakage From Happening

10 Ways To Stop Breakage From Happening

BREAKAGE!!!
We’ve all dealt with at one time or another. Breakage happens…
Although it’s nearly impossible to completely eliminate breakage there are some preventative measures that you can take.

See also: 5 Ways to Prevent Breakage in the Middle of Your Head

1. Stop The Hair Breaking Behavior

There are 3 common types of breakage: mechanical/manual (breakage from combing or manipulating hair), physical (breakage caused by heat appliances or physical elements such as winter air), and chemical (breakage caused by chemical treatments such as relaxers, Brazilian blow outs, or Kertain Treatments.
What’s important to remember is anything in excess can potential damage and break hair.  But if you notice more breakage or any hair loss, assess your routine and eliminate the hair breaking behavior.

2.  Learn the Best Ways to Handle Your Hair

As my hair gets longer, I have to make gradual changes to care for my hair.  That means preventing breakage by sometimes pre-pooing (pre-shampoo treatment) with coconut oil, using olive & coconut oil for an oil rinse, and shampooing my hair in twists or plaits.  Experiment with extra measures to minimize breakage in your hair.

3. Deep Condition Regularly

I deep condition my hair almost weekly to add an extra boost of moisture and breakage prevention.  After deep conditioning with any one of these 5 deep conditioners, you’ll notice less breakage and shedding.

4. Detangle Damp Hair Not Wet Hair

Hair is its most fragile when wet. If you have highly textured hair that tangles easily, its best to lightly mist hair and detangle with a wide tooth comb before shampooing.  Shampooing in plaits or jumbo twists also prevents tangles and breakage.

5. Trim Those Dead Ends

I know if seems counterproductive when you’re trying to grow your hair. But removing split ends is the only way to prevent further damage on other parts of the same hair strand where split ends are present. Whether you “search and destroy”, “dust”, or allow a professional stylist to trim your hair, it will help keep it in optimal shape and decrease breakage.

6. Choose The Best Detangling Tool

There are tons of detangling tools and some are better than others when it comes to detangling with little or no damage at all.  Tools like the Tangle Teezer (Tangle Teezer has been nicknamed the ‘Shredder’ by some.)  The best detangling tool regards of hair type is a seamless wide tooth comb.  NHR Contributor, Latoya swears that this $20 comb is worth every penny.

7. Moisturize Your Hair As Needed

Hair needs the perfect balance of moisture and protein to remain healthy or breakage free.  Here’s a great visual demonstration on how that works.  Hydrated hair is not easily broken. If you notice popping of hair strands, that’s a good sign that moisture is needed.

8. Don’t Over Do It With Moisturizing

There is a such thing as over moisturizing. Your hair will feel spongy with you deep condition overnight, baggy or practice the greenhouse effect too often. You can remedy this by incorporating a protein-based deep conditioning treatment.

9. Pay Due Respect To Your Scalp

A healthy scalp is essential to growing healthy hair.  Cleansing your scalp at least bi-weekly and keeping scalp moisturize can prevent hair loss and scalp irritation.

10. Give Your Ends Extra TLC

Your ends are both the oldest part of your hair and the most fragile.  They need a little extra attention.  Make sure you have your ends covered by applying product from ends to roots.  This is especially important when using the LOC method to moisturize hair.

5 Ways To Prevent Breakage in the Middle of Your Head

Ismail oubarka | 11:59 AM
breakage-in-crown-natural-hair

For those suffering with hair issues in the center of your head, this area always seems to be the driest, the kinkiest, the hardest to comb, and breakage comes easy. Does this sound like you? Well, I know exactly what you are going through because I have been there. This is why I have come up with 5 Ways To Prevent Breakage in the Middle of Your Head
In fact, in the beginning of my journey I did not use the proper techniques for handling this situation and this caused me to experience bad breakage in the center of my head. It was so bad that I just had to go to salon and get me a cut. My front and back portion of my hair were about 8 inches in length while my crown was only at about 3 inches.
SEE ALSO: Breakage vs. Hair Growth
Needless to say, it looked a hot mess and there was no way I was going to walk around like that. My hair was cut into layers for a more natural look which I have maintained to this day.
Hopefully your scenario has not gotten this bad, but if it has getting your hair cut by a professional is the best thing you can do.
To give your crown the best care and prevent breakage follow these tips:
  • When you moisturize or condition give this area of your hair give it a little more love. This area of your hair may require more nutrients than the rest of your hair and it will be up to you to quench its thirst.
  • Wear a scarf at night,Especially if you tend to sleep on your back like me, this will mat your hair like a pancake which can contributes a great deal to mid-section breakage.
  •  Twist or braid your hair at night to prevent the hair from matting. How you style your hair at night is important. It is not a good idea to sleep with your hair out and undone if you have a hair texture that is prone to matting. For a more simple solution you can pineapple your hair by putting it into one or two high ponytails.
  • I know detangling sessions can get tiring but as your hair grows out you will need to keep tangles at bay and you will want to make sure this area is detangled well.
  • In general too much heat, is not good for any part of your hair. However, if you notice that you experiencing breakage in this area you will want to make sure you are using very little to no heat on your crown as heat can make breakage problems worse.

According to Shanti Mayers of Around the Way Curls:
“Come to the realization that the hair in your center is simply a different texture than the rest. Just because it is thinner or more coarse does not make it a death sentence. It requires you treat it more attentively and gently. The troublesome area should become where your attention is focused rather than the bothersome afterthought. A gentle habit to consider is always finger detangling rather than raking a comb through your hair. If you are suffering from extreme dryness make sure your moisturizing regime is solid. Look for a leave in conditioner that is best for your area that is suffering the worst which is the minority rather than focusing on the benefits of the majority of your hair.  Remember that moisturizing is a two step process; moisture first and sealing second.”
More moisture,  gentle detangling, and protective night time care will help you to keep problem hair in the center of your head in check. Keep in mind that  it is quite possible to have two hair types on one head, which will require that you give your crown specialized treatment. If you hair has already experienced excessive damage, get a hair cut, start fresh, and use these preventive measures.

Staple Status // Meet My New Favorite Deep Conditioner

Ismail oubarka | 7:59 AM
It's been a while since I've stumbled on a deep conditioner that I loved enough to graduate to staple status.  After falling in madly love with Kerastase and Kanechom, I thought I was set.  But a series of recent events led me to the discovery of a new brand and I'm grateful for the wonderful twist of fate.

It all began after I started using Keratin Hair Botox.  For some reason, my hair seemed to respond really well to keratin protein so I started innocently looking around for a conditioner fortified with keratin to how my hair responded.
Then I stumbled on Keratinex Hair Mask, a Dominican brand that I never heard of.  At first I was just a bit curious. But when I looked a bit closer, I discovered that the label boasted of both keratin and Omega 3!  Ok.....sounds good so far, but what about the reviews?  Unfortunately, because this is such an unknown brand, there weren't that many available.

The price wasn't unreasonable so I took the plunge.

Upon my initial inspection of the packaging the first thing I noticed was the lid which flips open for easy access. I've never seen anything like this below.  The flip-top feature is quite handy for adding conditioner boosters like Pure Protein, silk amino acids, or whatever.  The flip top also provides easy access for dipping in my Sprush.
I was sold on Keratinex the moment I glided my fingers along the rim of the lid.  The texture was so smooth and creamy....ultra hydrating like my beloved Kanechom.  The biggest difference I see between the two is that Keratinex seems to have a little more substance.  I really do feel the impact of the omega 3 extract, lactic acid, panthenol and hydrolized keratin.   I don't feel as much need to fortify Keratinex with conditioner boosters as I do with my other products. It's like a fortifying and  hydrating conditioner all in one.   I still add boosters from time to time, but for the most part, Keratinex is capable of conditioning my hair on its own.
So far, I've repurchased multiple times.  On wash day, I tend to reach for Keratinex over the myriad of other options I have at my disposal.  My only gripe was that I wish they sold it in larger sizes.  Because of my heavy-handedness, I now purchase these two at a time.  Sometimes, I'll create larger batches by blending it with Kanechom's Shea Butter (my other fave).

I like this brand so much that I went ahead and grabbed their leave-in moisturizer.  Although I haven't used the moisturizer much lately, it came in quite handy during month 5 of my most recent stretch.

This conditioner has been really good to me which is why it'll forever be a staple.  But you know me....I still have my eye on one more conditioner that I've been dying to try out.  It's a bit more pricey but I just have to experience it.  Once this conditioner is in my clutches, I'll do full review.
