Christina's Choice 2016: Best Leave-In Conditioners for Natural Hair

Ismail oubarka | 11:03 AM
Best Leave-In Conditioners for Natural Hair
The best of the best leave-ins for natural hair!
Leave-ins sit at an interesting intersection in the natural hair category. On the whole, they're underrated as products, and there's a small subset of people in the natural hair community that believe they aren't even necessary - just another marketing gimmick.

I disagree.

In my humble opinion, leave-in conditioners are like, everything. When you have a good one, it does exactly as the name suggests - conditioning the hair post-wash, while softening, de-frizzing, retaining moisture, and sealing the cuticle of the hair. Leave-ins are also a part of the secret sauce of a great wash and go style. They help capture your curl pattern in it's most hydrated state, helping your curls ascend to epic levels of washing and going.

If your leave-in isn't achieving those levels of greatness, you're looking at this list for all the right reasons. Here are my top leave-in picks for 2016:

Best Leave-In Conditioners for Natural Hair
Best Leave-In Conditioners for Natural Hair
Two vets, two newbies!
Eden Bodyworks Coconut Shea Leave-In Conditioner, 8oz/$8.49
Three years and running! Eden's Coconut Shea Leave-In Conditioner is practically a legend at this point. The thick, creamy, coconutty leave-in is packed with super moisturizing ingredients like aloe vera, coconut, jojoba, safflower, and avocado oils - making it the ideal leave-in conditioner for naturalistas looking to retain softness and shine post-wash. Plus with the pricing under $10 and Sally Beauty always having a sale (like the buy 2, get 1 free happening right now), the value can't be beat.

CURLS Blueberry Bliss Reparative Leave-In Conditioner, 8oz/$11.99
New to the rotation and deservedly so is the CURLS Blueberry Bliss Reparative Leave-In Conditioner! I was introduced to this product early in 2016, and kept in in stock allllll year long. Not only is the blueberry smell addicting, it's super creamy, smooth, and hydrating. It soars above ALL the marks for a great leave-in conditioner, and I personally love the addition of blueberry extract, quinoa protein, and silk amino acids to strengthen and protect the hair long after wash day. CURLS really knocked this one out of the park!

tgin Green Tea Moisturizing Leave-In Conditioner, 14.5oz/$14.99

You guys know I love me some tgin. When tgin dropped their Green Tea Moisturizing Leave-In Conditioner, I was hooked instantly. Packed with green tea extract, aloe, cocoa butter, argan, and sweet almond oils, this ultra creamy and moisturizing (yet light) leave-in showed my curls some major love. It plays nicely with virtually every curl definer in my stash - which is HUGE. And I absolutely loooooove the sizing!! 14.5oz of product? Yes, please!

Soultanicals Mango Dip Detangling Slip, 8oz/$16
I've been crushing on Mango Dip Detangling Slip for two years straight. Why? Two words: botanical magic. Not only does it smell like a tropical paradise, it envelops my curls in a curl-boosting cocktail of botanical goodness. It glides onto my curls like sweet, sweet buttah with tons of moisture and frizz-fighting goodness. Oh and the slip? Off the charts -- which makes Mango Dip Detangling Slip a rockstar leave-in, detangler, mid-week moisturizer, and natural gal's best friend. I can't get enough of this stuff - and always keep a bottle on hand.

Deserted Island Pick
Best Leave-In Conditioners for Natural Hair
Two years in a row!
The leave-in, the legend. Holding down the Deserted Island spot for 2015 and 2016 is no easy feat! You gotta be daaaaaaaarn good to get to this spot two years in a row! And the truth is, Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea Leave-In Conditioner deserves the honor. It's super effective, super affordable, super versatile, and super accessible. I've literally never had a failed style with this leave-in - which says a lot. And much like last year, I had a TOUGH call to make between Eden and Soultanicals Mango Dip - because they're similar in consistency and performance. Last year, Eden took the W based on price and on the ground accessibility. Well, since Soultanicals is now on the ground (yasssss!) I had to go back to the drawing board and think long, and hard. And what it came down to was this - what I bought more of. This year, I purchased more Edens than Soultanicals in the battle of Coconut Shea vs. Mango Dip. The battle was hard fought, and both products are amazing. But Eden takes the win for 2016!

[Try This] Jazzma Kendrick's 3 Step Glowy Foundation Routine.

Ismail oubarka | 5:57 PM
I'm aware that I litterally just published a SnapChat Secrets post but I just stumbled upon another beauty routine that's too goo not to share.

I happened to randomly jump on an Instagram Story that contained a great tip on how to create a glowing visage.  The secret was revealed by Jazzma Kendrick, a gorgeous model who made headlines earlier this year for her on and off again relationship with Italian boyfriend Christian Vieri.  She's also been linked to Naomi Campbell's ex billionaire boyfriend.  But we're not here to discuss her love life, we're here to learn her three step foundation routine that gives her this crazy glow.

The Instagram story begins with Jazzma seated in a luxurious bathroom wearing a comfy white robe. She's about to tell us about a magic show experience from the night before when, all of the sudden, she spills a small bottle of oil.  This prompts her to go on a mini rant full of obscenities and pouting as Jazzma explains that this facial oil is "what keeps this skin looking like butter."

Although Jazzma expressed her desire to cry over the tragedy, she doesn't. Instead she continues on with the story as she rubs some of the salvaged oil on her perfect skin.  After a little bit of on-camera flirting with her boyfriend, Jazzma gets to the important stuff.

Suddenly we see her with a full face of foundation. I leaned in closer to my phone as she began by saying "so someone wanted to know what foundation I use."....... When she reached out of frame to grab the product, I knew we'd be in for another beauty ritual reveal.

Jazzma holds the foundation close to the screen and informs everyone that she uses MAC Matchmaster in 8.5.  "Cool," I thought. That's good to keep in mind when I run out of my current lineup."  I figured that was the end of her reveal but boy was I wrong.  She quickly picks up the next product that she blends with her favorite foundation to give her skin "a little glow" 😉  In her hand is NYX's Liquid Illuminator.

Finally, she shares her entire process by revealing that she mixes both oil and a liquid illuminator with her foundation for a subtle and healthy glow.  It's hard to see the label of the oil she's holding but she does list the ingredients as argan oil, prickly pear seed oil, vitamin C & vitamin E.  Just a few drops of this oil is all she needs to create the desired look.

Lastly, Jazzma informs us that she drenches her face in this oil every morning and every night before bed.  Sound familiar?  Everyone and their momma is on this "go to bed greasy" bandwagon.  Please do yourself a favor and join us if you haven't yet.  I don't know any woman, with amazing skin, who doesn't leverage the power of nourishing oils to achieve the buttery smooth complexion we so deserve.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about when I say go to bed greasy, please read these posts so you can catch up with the rest of the class.

Oh, I have a treat for you. I actually grabbed the videos so you can hear Jazzma's process straight from the woman herself.

This 3 Minute Video will show you how to Create Perfect Heatless Waves

Ismail oubarka | 8:43 AM
I've been taking full advantage of the lower humidity in recent months. This means lots of curly hairstyles that don't require heat to last all day.  Last week, I played around with setting my hair on large drinking straws and loved the result.  That day, I pretty much swore off flexi rods forever!

The next day, a video came into my life that reignited my love for flexi rods again.  Our nasty breakup lasted only 24 hours thanks to fate's divine intervention.

One look at the video's title and I knew I was in for a treat.  YouTuber NaturallyChea promised to show us how to achieve the perfect "heatless wand curls."  You might remember how I recently expressed my love for wand curls.  The end result is just so perfect.  Sometimes flexi rods are a hit or miss, but I can always count on my wand curls to come through for me.

Creating perfect waves (without heat) is now possible if you follow Chea's flexi rod technique.  Her tutorial is short and to the point.  To hold the curl, she uses Shea Moisture's Curl Mousse and Curls Blueberry Twist & Shout Cream.

Chea's technique is ultra precise as she rolls her hair around the rod.  Pay close attention to the movement of her wrists because that's a major key.   If you can master that motion, you can achieve the most beautiful flexi rod waves of all time.  I've applied her technique and loved the results.

Check it out.

Christina's Choice 2016: Best Deep Conditioners for Natural Hair

Ismail oubarka | 9:48 AM
Christina's Choice 2016: Best Deep Conditioners for Natural Hair
The best moisturizing deep conditioners for natural hair are....
Now this is a category I get uber excited about. I mean, what naturalista doesn't love a great deep conditioner? Deep conditioning is such an essential component of any healthy hair regimen. Depending upon your hair's needs, either an emollient-rich, hydrating deep conditioner or protein-infused masque can be the lifeline that brings tired, weary, dry, dull tresses back from the brink.

And for that very reason, I've decided that for Christina's Choice 2016 I'm splitting the deep conditioners into two categories - moisturizing and strengthening. That way, my protein-sensitive naturalistas have a few options, as well as those who (like me), love ALL the proteins. Without further delay, let's get this party started!

Best Moisturizing Deep Conditioners for Natural Hair
Christina's Choice 2016: Best Deep Conditioners for Natural Hair
The winners of 2016!
LUSH Deep Conditioner by Miche,8oz/$15.95
LUSH is the brainchild of beauty YouTuber Michelle B.//Everything Mich and burst onto the natural haircare scene in a real way. It's thick, rich, full of mega moisturizers like aloe, castor oil, babassu oil, and honey - while maintaining an intense amount of slip that will make any naturalista happy to have wash day. The fragrance is a dream, and it makes my curls feel smoooooth as buttah. LUSH Deep Conditioner is a knockout offering from Michelle, and I love the idea of supporting a content creator branching off into full-blown entrepreneurship.

tgin Honey Miracle Hair Mask, 12oz/$14.99
I don't think Honey Miracle Hair Mask will not never be on this list. It's one deep conditioner that I've seen naturalistas of all textures and types flock to - not only does it smell amazing and feel super creamy, it's loaded with honey, olive, and jojoba oils - providing a decadently moisturizing punch while making the hair feel super smooth and shiny. And the slip? Off the chain. I can't get enough of Honey Miracle Hair Mask - I've been rocking with it since my transitioning days...which is a crazy feat for a product junkie like me!

Bekura Beauty YAM Nectar, 8oz/$24
You ever have one of those products that you've had your eye on for a loooooong time, but never pulled the trigger? YAM Nectar was that product for me. I heard the stories and legends surrounding this product, but didn't dive in until this year. But when I did? LOVE. Love at first scoop. YAM Nectar isn't your typical moisturizing deep conditioner. It looks like honey, moves like sticky candy, but goes on the hair easily with sooooo much slip. The softness and shine that YAM Nectar delivers is out of this world. It's truly an experience - and one of the best that my curls had in 2016.

Deserted Island Pick
Christina's Choice 2016: Best Deep Conditioners for Natural Hair
Have you tried this yet?
Since my transitioning days in 2012, my hair has been through a lot. From heat damage, to healthy, to color damage, recovery, and the road back - Honey Miracle Hair Mask has seen it all. And performed beautifully in each scenario. That alone makes it worth the coveted Deserted Island Pick. But the fact that I can easily access tgin on the ground at Target and Sally Beauty makes it that much easier to love. No matter what condition your hair is currently in - Honey Miracle Hair Mask will work it out for sure!

Best Strengthening Deep Conditioners

Christina's Choice 2016: Best Deep Conditioners for Natural Hair
These deep conditioners will leave your hair strong...and soft.
Inahsi Naturals Mango Hemp Restorative Hair Masque, 8oz/$9.99
Just in case you thought about sleeping on Inahsi Naturals Mango Hemp Restorative Hair Masque, let me tell you why you shouldn't. Mango, hemp, avocado, silk aminos, and oat protein make this strengthening masque one for the books! Not only is it super thick and moisturizing, it nourishes the hair while strengthening the weakest spots along the strand. My curls felt amazing after one use - so I kept coming back, and back, and back. I couldn't get enough. Still can't. Whether I use it for 5 minutes in the shower or 30 minutes with heat, the results are epic - smooth, shiny, soft, strong hair - every single time. I'll be posting a review on this soon, for sure. P.S. - Mango Hemp Restorative Hair Masque is on sale for $9.99 right now! Getchu some!

Soultanicals Afrotastic Curl Elastic, 8oz/$16
Listen. In 2015, Afrotastic Curl Elastic had me getting every inch of my life. In 2016, no exceptions are being made. Once Soultanicals had me regrouped from my LifeAlert bracelet moment (when they entered Target stores and fulfilled my lifelong natural dreams), you couldn't keep me off the hair aisle. Afrotastic Curl Elastic is always in rotation - it's a nutritional powerhouse for hair that needs a little extra TLC. The water is botanically infused with marshmallow, rosemary, burdock root, amla, sage, and more to strengthen hair at the roots and stimulate growth. Pro Vitamin B5 and hydrolyzed jojoba protein strengthen and fortify the hair, while ximenia, olive, and avocado deeply moisturize and smooth rough cuticles. P.S. Soultanicals is having their 50% off end of the year sale right now, (use code YEAREND50) plus salon sizes are $25! You can't beat that with a stick!

Mielle Organics Babassu Oil Mint Deep Conditioner, 8oz/$14.99
Listen, Linda. In my original Mielle Organics review video, I was mad, shocked, and hurt that nobody told me how bomb the Babassu Oil Mint Deep Conditioner was. And then, I was in LifeAlert mode again when Mielle Organics showed up in Sally's. Y'all. I was literally calling various locations, driving around, calendaring the inventory delivery dates - in the name of getting my hands on this stuff. I literally would buy 2, 3, or 4 at a time - because I didn't ever want to be without it. And I still don't. The Unique blend of babassu oil and amino acids make this deep conditioner one for the ages - it strengthens and enhances natural texture without the direct use of hydrolyzed proteins - making it a great option for protein sensitive naturalistas.

Curls Dynasty Pumpkin Mint Deep Treatment Masque, 8oz/$16
New on the scene (for me at least), and pulling no punches is Curls Dynasty. I went into a pumpkin frenzy in 2016, after learning the DHT-blocking benefits of pumpkin. Curls Dynasty is one of the few brands to uniquely harness this nutrient powerhouse, using pumpkin seed oil and extract along with peppermint, yucca, horsetail, and nettle to strengthen and fortify hair from the roots on down. Even though it does contain protein (which I love), the Pumpkin Mint Deep Treatment Masque leaves the hair soft, smooth, strong, and supple while providing a tingly mint sensation on the scalp. It blew me away at first use, and I was instantly addicted. I kept going back. And back again. And back again.

Deserted Island Pick
Christina's Choice 2016: Best Deep Conditioners for Natural Hair
Who was shocked by this one? Let me know in the comments below!
I will cross the ocean for you,
I will take this with me to the moon,
Babassu you're my hero,
My strength,
Everything my curls need....

Okay, I'm sure Monica caught secondhand embarrassment from that terrible remix and rendition, but no truer words have been spoken. A few of you guys asked me if Mielle Organics was going to oust Soultanicals for the coveted spot, and I told you I didn't know. That was the truth. This was quite literally one of the most difficult decisions I had to make. They're both in the same price bracket, same product category, both available on the ground, and contain stellar ingredients. I bought them both like hotcakes...

But in the end, I had to choose. I couldn't violate the spirit of the Deserted Island Pick...so by the narrowest of margins, I present the winner - Mielle Organics Babassu Oil Mint Deep Conditioner.

SnapChat Beauty Secret Roundup!

Ismail oubarka | 9:48 AM
I remember the good 'ol days of Instagram where celebrities generously offered us glimpses into their personal lives.  Nowadays, Instagram feeds mainly consist of carefully selected images that don't really represent true life.

In the past, one might stumble upon a beauty tip revealed by one of our fave icons.  Once Instagram became a revenue-generating platform, things changed.  Luckily for us, Snapchat is here to save the day.  The nature of the app invites everyone to share what they are doing at that very moment.  As a result, celebrities are back to spilling their secrets.  I've screenshotted a few of these gems as I came across them.  Allow me to share a quick roundup of my favorite beauty secret reveals yet.
Kim K hasn't been active on social media for a while now.  I don't really follow her on Insta or Twitter but something told me to add her to my Snapchat just incase something like this happened.  Within days of adding her, she revealed her morning routine.

Jackpot!

Prior to displaying the products, she made sure to snap a text post stating that what we were about to see was "not an ad."  This meant that she was showing us her true faves.  Then Kim proudly displays her LaMer collection including their Creme De La Mer Moisturizing Cream, their Perfecting Treatment, Serum Concentrate, and the Renewal oil which comprises of various plant-based oils and skin loving extracts.

But before layering on the multitude of LaMer products, Kim reaches for these wipes.
KIKO Scrub & Peel wipes seem to be her favorite.  From what I gather, these wipes are special because of their exfoliating qualities.  But, unlike Dr. Dennis Gross' wipes, these offer manual exfoliation due to the raised texture.  I love using makeup removal wipes but sometimes I'm looking for that something extra.  Exfoliating wipes just may be the answer.

Meagan Good carries around Clearasil pads in her bag.  Kim K prefers these rosewater based cleansing pads.  Apparently, In Transit No Traces pads leave the skin feeling hydrated and completely free of makeup.  So if you have a drier skin type, be sure to check these out.
I happened to be on a live Instagram session yesterday held by young up and coming model & Instagram star Kendra Bailey.   She was about to attend her little brother's basketball game and wanted to chat with her followers before heading out.  Just before jumping off the live stream, she informed the audience that she had to go do her lashes. Someone had the common sense to ask the right follow-up question.  Kendra read the question and answered, "I use L'Oreal Telescopic mascara."  The video ended and I realized that this was not the first time that I heard someone claim this mascara as their holy grail.  When I hear a product mentioned over several instances, I take it as a sign.

Enough was enough, I had to finally try it for myself.  Let me tell you all, that this is probably my new fave.  The weird looking wand has the ability to capture my puny little lashes and make them look extraordinary.  I still love Heroine Make's formula but Telescopic transforms my lashes.  I plan on combining the two so I can pair Telescopic's lengthening capabilities with Heroine Make's long lasting formula.
I added Zendaya after seeing a pic of her flaunting her glowing skin on Snap.  What I've realized after following her for a short while is that Zendaya loves her sheet masks.  Although she hasn't yet revealed which brand is her favorite, she gives us a clear reminder that hydrated skin is most important above all.

Speaking of hydration.  Check out this awesome "model tip" from former Ameria's Next Top Model contestant, Mame.  This girl has been keeping busy with modeling gigs ever since the show completed.  So far, she's only shared this one beauty tip and I think it's a good one.  Instead of wearing your typical sheet masks, Mame opts for more targeted hydrating by employing what appears to be gel pads.  Not sure how well these work but I like the idea of using gel pads to keep the moisture in longer.

In keeping with the hydration theme, let's wrap up this compilation with the most powerful beauty secret of all.
Gabrielle is here to bring us our daily reminder that we should be water-drinking warriors.  It's one thing to read an article where Gabby talks about drinking adequate water, but when she snaps a pic with said gallon, it creates a new level of inspiration.  This isn't the first time that she's shared this reminder.  Is it any wonder that we never catch this girl on an off day. Her skin stays flawless. And that's because homegirl is consistent.  Consistency pays off big time.

[Try This] Gabrielle Union's look done by Kim K's MakeUp Artist

Ismail oubarka | 9:42 AM
I've been on this kick in 2016 where I stalk celebrity makeup artists for glimpses of their favorite technique/product that they swear by.  So far, I've learned a lot of little helpful tips from Beyonce's artist, Sir John.

Recently, I learned of Mario Dedivanovic who responsible for Kim Kardashian's flawless looks.  The minute I found out who he was, I searched for his Instagram.  After a bit a scrolling, I stumbled on a pic that immediately caught my eye.

It was Gabby Union sitting in what appears to be the guest couch on a late night talk show.  In the caption Mario invites his followers to take a guess at the lip combo used to create this gorgeous look.  The only hint he provides is that he's been using this specific combination of products for years.

Several commenters shared their best guesses for which products were used.  Unfortunately, Mario never reveals this secret.

What kind of stalker would I be if I didn't do some digging online in search of more clues?

In one of the countless articles I read, I learned that Mario prefers to use a lip liner that's deeper than your natural lip. He revealed that he often likes to line the entire lip with a pencil and fishing the look with a gloss or balm.  Then I recalled one of the commenters who guessed that Mario used a combination of MAC's Chestnut Liner and Oh Baby Lip Gloss.  Although Mario never confirmed, I realized that I had both products in my possession and decided to give a go.

After a few minutes of searching, I couldn't find Oh Baby but I did find MAC's Spice (which a couple other people guessed in the comments).  The final result of the two paired together looked very much like Gabby's lips in the picture.

I was elated.  The combination was ultra flattering and very wearable.  But then I glanced at her eye makeup and wondered if I could create a look inspired by what he created.  What I love about what Mario did with her eye is that it didn't seem overdone.  No bold winged liner, no false lashes.  Like Gabrielle, I don't have much lid space. I have somewhat of a hooded lid while Gabby has smaller lids (before her crease).

As a master makeup artist, Mario took advantage of the entire eye space to compensate for the small lid.  So I rushed to find my Morphe palette then proceeded to blend the shadow on my lids almost toward the brows.  The final look was amazing. The combination of the chocolate lip and lid complimented my features so well.  Best of all, it was super easy to recreate.  I think this look will be my new signature face.  Now I get why Kim hired this guy immediately after he first did her makeup at a magazine shoot.  He understands the subtleties that flatter the women he works on.  Mario's also done the faces of Naomi Harris, Chanel Iman, and Jourdan Dunn.  This man knows how to highlight and accentuate the natural beauty of this clients.

p.s. He's also a fan of the liner layering method for those times when you want to do a bold cat eye.
