I'm going to get my Lashes Lifted!

Ismail oubarka | 8:43 AM
In an hour, I'll be experiencing my first lash lift procedure.  Basically, it's a viable alternative to lash extensions.  I can't tell you how many times I've read accounts of women who claim that lash extensions were the best thing that ever happened to them.  They save time, compliment your face and give you doe eyes without any effort.

I've had lash extensions before, twice.  But honestly, they don't really compliment my small eyes and hooded lid.  If I had large, almond shaped eyes, I would live in lash extensions, but unfortunately, I have to try another route.

That's when I heard about the Lash Lift technique.  The woman who will be doing my Lash Lift described it as giving your lashes that post curler lift (all the time).   Simply put, it'll be your lashes, only better and more dramatic.
Actual lash lift results
The results aren't permanent, they last around 6-8 weeks.  But if I can walk around looking like I have naturally robust lashes, I'll gladly do it.  I love the look of long natural lashes but I could never achieve it without tons of mascara.  That's ok for evening, but I still want visible lashes for no makeup days.   And, when I do use mascara, the lashes will be even more dramatic!

The procedure takes about about an hour and prices range. I've seen some places offer it for $100-$150.  I was fortunate enough to find someone locally who charges around $75.00.  This method is ideal if you have long straight lashes that point outwards.  Unfortunately, I have short, somewhat curly lashes so I'm not quite sure what to expect.  But, if my natural lashes are more visible without makeup, I'll be a happy gal.

Fingers crossed.

5 Reasons Curlformers Are Bae

Ismail oubarka | 7:58 AM

Whitney WhiteI wrote a post several months ago, detailing my concerns about entering the workforce and rocking my fierce, bold ‘fro. I had just discovered updo’s and felt a lot better about my hair not being the center of attention every time I walked into the room. (Though, let’s face it, no matter how I wear […]

From Degrassi to Black Actress, the Story of Andrea Lewis

Ismail oubarka | 11:45 AM
by Mike Orie of theconscioustip
When you’re a kid, there’s one question you’re commonly asked. What do you want to be when you grow up? For some, it’s the traditional response of doctors and lawyers, a reflection of what little they’ve seen. However, as you get older, you’ll look back and realize just how absurd of a question that is for a 5-year old. Society tells us that it’s completely normal for you to change your mind. Multiple times. But what if the answer your 5-year old self gave is still in line with present, 30-year old you? It’s a rare thing, but it’s the story of Andrea Lewis. Acting is literally all she’s every known. In kindergarten, her 5-year old self knew exactly what she wanted to be, and today she still manages to find new ways to fall in love with it all over again.
The Toronto native has made a name for herself doing exactly what she loves everyday. For her, there’s simply no other option. “I’ve been doing this my whole life. I’ve never one, had the time to do a normal job. And I can’t even imagine doing a normal job.” It’s been a little over six months since she moved back to LA. Before that, she’s traveled back and forth between there, Toronto and New York. “I spent a year and a half moving back and forth from Toronto, New York and LA. In September I made LA my base. My producing partner lives here. I always said that I thought that LA had a similar pace as Toronto, just with more opportunities. LA is such a chill place. And there’s a lot of Canadians here.”

But while she’s made LA home, there are certainly some differences. I ask her about the concept of why people from the US might consider moving to Canada if Trump becoming president ever became a reality. “In Toronto you’re very culturally aware. You know the difference between someone who’s from Thailand and Korea. It makes you more accepting because you’re taking more time to understand each other’s cultures.” This awareness of different cultures has also made her more in tune with her own. “I always call myself a West Indian Canadian. Where I’m from, you don’t really have a lot of people who aren’t initially from somewhere else. Your parents aren’t from the country that you’re being raised in, so they try to do your best. That’s the different between being a Black person in Canada, versus being a Black person in the states.”

This year’s a busy year for her as well as her production company, Jungle Wild Productions. It’s a Friday afternoon in LA. Only a few hours shy of a gig she has with Black & Sexy TV. She’s been working nonstop on new material. Despite her impressive resume, people still remember Andrea Lewis mostly for her role as Hazel in Degrassi. We talk about how she’s balanced maintaining the notoriety this role has got her, while also encouraging people to stay current on her new work. “I haven’t figured out exactly. Every person will eventually do a role that people will associate you with. Aubrey is very successful, but some people still remember him as wheelchair Jimmy. I think that’s a part of the business you have to accept. I’m fortunate in the sense that the people who do follow me, they don’t see me as Hazel, they see me as Andrea Lewis. I think it would be worse to be ungrateful. When I was younger I used to be a little frustrated, but as I’ve gotten older, I’m just grateful to have something that people remember me for.”

Late 2013, she introduced the web series Black Actress. Most of her work as of late has been a reflection of her reality. “I think what I realized with me, everything that I put out and produce, it’s about what I’m currently learning through life. That’s the common theme. Black Actress was written in a time when I was insecure. Beyond Complicated was based on relationships and things I’ve learned.” The concept of Black Actress was inspired from a moment while she was on set in Vancouver. It was a moment where she was introduced to another cast member as the urban/Black actress on the set. “The funny thing is, I’m still good friends with one of the cast members of the situation. That’s how strange that moment was, cause it affected him. He still brings it up. I think why I wanted to make Black Actress because I think everybody has had this experience, whether famous or not. I think he described me as this, because he saw me the way the script saw me.”

This is her reality. She’s a culmination of her life experiences, and her work is a direct response to it. Over the years she’s developed thick skin, truly embraced self-love and developed into the person that she wants to become. She’s learned how to say no to opportunities that aren’t an accurate reflection of how she wants to be portrayed. Self-aware enough to realize that what she does is bigger than her. That means making the right choices over compromising for opportunity. She elaborates on this responsibility. “I’ve had a few auditions this year where the roles were, in my opinion kind of stereotypical. I can’t tell if it’s just my eye and my critical lens.” But ultimately it’s about where you see yourself in the long run. “These roles are sometimes great, but in the back of your mind, if I was to get this, how would I justify this. I think it depends on the type of artist you want to be as a person of color. Some of us don’t care. At some point it’s a conversation you have to have with yourself.” I absolutely loved that she got this, and it was probably my favorite moment of our conversation. Cultural accountability.
Earlier this year she released a new web series titled ‘Beyond Complicated.’ It’s a show that I, an African American male relate to the most. It juxtaposes the male and female perspective of a complicated relationship. Only four episodes in, and I’m already hooked. “The show was inspired by my friends. I could understand the guy and the girl’s perspectives and understand why they couldn’t see eye to eye. When I thought about a series on dating, I wanted to see it all.”

Imperfections and all, Andrea Lewis has come a long way. Just like you, or I, she sometimes doubts herself, but never enough to give up her dreams. She’s young, talented, and extremely self-aware. Life has taught her how to budget money in between gigs, and she’s remained her true self over all these years. Perhaps it was attending regular school despite being on set, or maintaining the same best friends since elementary school. She attributes her beginning in entertainment to her mother. “My mom put me in the business as a little kid, but I stayed because I loved it.” It’s been nearly 15 years since she first stepped into the character Hazel, and she shows no signs of slowing down. From Degrassi to Black Actress, this is the story of Andrea Lewis.

Beauty Splurge | The high end products these celebrities beauties absolutely love.

Ismail oubarka | 8:39 AM
This morning, while browsing through the gossip sites, I came across a pic of Brandy Norwood looking absolutely flawless at a Lakers game.

Although Brandy is in her mid-late thirties, she looks a decade younger.  I wondered if she had any special products or beauty secrets that we should all know about.  Within minutes of my search, I stumbled on an interview she did with a major beauty magazine.
@4everBrandy
In the interview,, she shared the obligatory "I drink a lot of water" comment.  But then Brandy went on to proclaim her love for Nutra Bisse products.  My first introduction to the Nutra Bisse brand was years ago. As a matter of fact, I was doing research on Beyonce's favorite skin care products.  That was the only brand she mentioned.  Part of me was skeptical about whether she actually used it.  But my questions were put to rest when Beyonce gave a shout out to Nutra Bisse's diamond cream facials in her song "Upgrade U."

Beyonce ain't the only one on the Nutra Bisse bandwagon, Kelly Rowland is another raving fan of the line.  I remember an old Destiny's Child behind the scenes interview where Kelly disclosed that self care beauty treatments were her favorite thing to do.  And, in multiple interviews, Kelly has made her love for NutraBisse's Diamond cream known.  As a matter of fact, I came across an interview of Lala Anthony (Kelly's bestie) who declared that she often receives facials from Kelly Rowland who apparently is a skin care expert.

So now we have Brandy, the woman who refuses to age, declaring her love for Nutra Bisse products as well.  She's been faithfully using their Anti-Aging collection for years.  In her words, she "spends dough on the skin stuff."  Because, to her, flawless skin is everything.  Her investment is definitely paying off.  Brandy isn't just a Diamond Cream girl, she goes all out with the Luxury Cleanse, White Glowing Mask, Extreme Eye serum and the Diamond Gel Cream.

I actually saw Brandy in person a long, long time ago.  It was at a local charity basketball game and I got to see her up close.  One thing that stood out was how much makeup she was wearing.  To me it seemed like A LOT.  Especially for such a casual event. It wasn't a ton of eyeshadow or anything, just a lot of face coverage.  I suspect this has to do with her desire to have absolutely amazing skin.

Can we talk about how celebrities, who seemingly already have flawless skin invest hundreds on skin care products?   Or how both Brandy and Kelly Rowland talk about working out every day although they already have naturally small frames.  This serves as a reminder that we must never rest on our current results.  If we put in the effort, our results can be magnified.  It's the chicken or the egg question.  Do Brandy, Kelly and Beyonce already have flawless skin that they love to care for or do they enjoy skin perfection because they are very willing to invest in the best?

My Experience With Traction Alopecia

Ismail oubarka | 7:24 AM

traction alopeciaI was a serial hair puller; I would wear tight buns and ponytails during the day then tightly tie my scarf around my edges at night. I liked to wear my hair a little tighter simply because it looked neater and felt more secure when I was wearing extensions or clip ins. It wasn’t until […]

Why I Really Failed To Stay Natural The First Time I Tried

Ismail oubarka | 4:53 PM

happy black womanAs someone who is a little over 2 years into her natural journey, I have noticed how much my curls have grown and flourished all while gaining a greater sense of self love and appreciation. But what many don’t know is that when I had my last relaxer in December of 2013 and made the ultimate […]

5 Bad Habits I Had To Let Go Of Once I Went Natural

Ismail oubarka | 9:52 AM

@curldazeI’ve been natural for a little over 2 years. As I look back at my regimen and hair care practices I did when my hair was relaxed I cringe. What was I thinking? A question I ask myself frequently. For example, as someone who kept my hair cut short if all else failed and damage […]

While there’s no question that fashion week is a lot of fun, it can also be a lot of work. Whether you’re a model running to castings or a photographer trying to get the perfect street style snap, spending morning ’til night out in New York (or London, Milan, or Paris!) means having to have all your essentials in one place.

That’s why we asked these 13 fashion insiders what they keep in their bags during the insanity that is fashion week. From the lipstick that keeps them looking fresh to the charger that keeps them connected, no clutch, tote, or crossbody is complete without these must-have items.

What kind of bag do you prefer to use for getting around fashion week and why?
A midsize leather bucket or small leather backpack. I definitely need something larger than a purse but still small enough and compact so it can easily transition from day to evening.

What’s your favorite?

Yvonne Koné makes amazing leather bucket bags crafted in Italy in small to large sizes and an array of colors, while Brandon Blackwood makes the most beautiful leather backpack that even comes with a leather whale shaped coin pouch and keychain holder.

sandraarenas1726

What do you always keep in your bag during fashion week?

Mobile charger: Microsoft’s xoopar charger is able to juice a computer up to six hours with a micro USB and dual USB outlet so you can share in the charging love with friends.

Flats or my favorite pair of sneakers, in particular my ‘limited edition NO. 20′ Matt Bernson white lo-cut leather sneakers with a built in sole cushion.

Sony NEX-5R Camera: has a compact body but takes regular size interchangeable lenses, which is perfect for my smaller size bag.

i-Phone, food, makeup bag!

Lexus card and number for the Lexus lounge: Thank the high high heavens Lexus has sponsored us a car and driver eight hours a day, seven days a week. This has made NYFW’s schedule extremely less frantic and the day soooooooooo much more seamless for my twin sister and I! Plus they have an amazing lounge with food, fresh squeezed juices and champagne for a quick reprieve before or after shows.

Cat frame pastel mauve Dita Sunglasses — they go with everything and spice up even conservative outfits in a more subtle way. Plus, they cover under eye bags in morning from late night events so you are ready for photographers for all of the morning shows.

Passport: On the go during fashion week means in and out of the country

What are your absolute essentials for traveling during fashion week?

Sneakers, moisturizer, food, water, phone, charger, camera, makeup bag, sunglasses, passport. I should have just said all of the above. My makeup bag is a front row essential since after shows there are a plethora of events and after-parties, which means I don’t have time to change and will need to do a quick refresher. My go to staples are lipcolor, powder, hydration spritz, mascara and under eye concealer. I am really really feeling MILK Makeup‘s new line. All of their products are made from Eco-friendly ingredients with hydrating properties. They have so many amazing products for someone on the go, so I can easily apply in the car and in between shows and look refreshed.

So I will be carrying their MILK Makeup cooling water hydration stick, oil lip stain, lip salve, highlighter stick, and gel brow, as well as my favorite under-eye concealer by Cinema Secrets, L’Oreal mascara and matte powder, plus NARS lip color in pink mauve, fuchsia or red tones. I love a very natural look with a pop of color.
