5 Rolled Out Of Bed And Late For Work Hair Fixes In A Flash

Ismail oubarka | 3:25 PM
by

UGH! You seem to have late for no good reasons mornings way too often, and if you don’t get your butt in gear, you may be looking at a stern warning, or a disapproving eye from your boss, or teacher. Being late for work/school is unprofessional and looks bad. No matter what your reasons were, it can make it hard for you when you need to move ahead, or need assistance. Sorry boo, the whole CP time is not cute, nor is it a way to make it in the real world – so time to step it up!

5 Rolled Out Of Bed And Late For Work Hair Fixes In A Flash
5 Rolled Out Of Bed And Late For Work Hair Fixes In A Flash

I know, I know… you mean well, and have all the good intentions in the world to get to work or school on time. You have ironed your clothes at night, woken up earlier, and even tried to do your hair at night too. It never fails that as soon as you wake up with spittle on your chin, and only one twist in your head, you know you are stuck like chuck, and now in a rush to do something with your hair!

How in the world are you going to get to work on time? Well, no need to worry, because I’ve got you covered. You can learn a few tricks from some masters as quick fixes to a common natural hair problem – not having enough time to do hair before going out of the door.

First off here are a few tips:

1. Keep your hair accessories at the ready, either on your bathroom counter, or in your shower.

2. Create a nightly routine, and stick to it! Consistency is key.

3. Wear a satin bonnet, or sleep on a satin pillowcase to ensure your hair is not dry, or smashed in the morning.

Quick bad hair day fix | natural hair

Naptural 85 always has a few tricks up her sleeve when it comes to perfect hair in a short amount of time. She shares two super quick styles that can be created to be slept on (not twisted up the night before hair). All you need is medium to long hair to achieve.
One uses a clip, while the other style uses bobby pins, but both are cute enough to get you out of the door, and off to work within minutes.  Hair too dry?  Hit it with a few sprays from a water/oil/conditioner mix, and run with it! Check out the video below:

5 Hottest head wrap styles for TWA hair

I can’t even deny it…I love Sadora!  She’s so creative and thinking out of the box seems to be her forte. TWA naturals complain about lack of choices way too much in my book, and that is getting old.

Check out what Sadora’s “5 great styles, one multi-colored scarf,” can do on a bad hair day, or a “I’ve only got a few minutes to get out of the house” morning.  All are pretty, professional and quick, so stress less and move more toward that door, and get to work looking fab! All of these styles can be worn on longer hair, or hair overdue for washday.

How to fix a bad hair day – quick and easy

Bad hair days are no match for Andrea Lewis, as she turns a scrunchie and a scarf into a style that looks like it took all day to create. She also shows you how to rock au naturale, with a few expert tools (her fingers), and even ends with some great parting words about rocking and accepting your hair and beauty. Gotta give it to her – she makes you realize bad hair days can be few and far in-between.

Hat hair of the day

How many times have you been left in a bind, even when you try to prepare? Twist didn’t dry all the way, or looking a tad bit haphazard? Toni Daley shows you exactly how to work with ‘whatcha’ got, and make it uber-bohemian glammed!

A simple, but cute hat, some finger play, a few bobby pins, big gorgeous earrings, and some lip gloss is all you need to look like you ‘woke up that way’. Length of hair is not a factor for this amazing look. Toni deserves an award

How to refresh your Wash & Go – 2nd day hair – SimplYounique

No worries, Wash and Goer’s, I haven’t forgotten about you! Don’t have enough time to jump in the shower and co-wash, or do a full refresh of your coils and curls?  Watch SimpleYounique quickly refresh her WnG with some water and EVOO. Now finally, you too can achieve great 2nd day hair, without spending a ton of time with product.  Just prep the night before by tying it down, and make the beauty happen in a flash the next day.

Now, no more excuses on being late, and definitely no more excuses for looking like you did not put any effort into your look.  It takes a little creativity, and the right resources, to have your look put together, and your hair on point. There are several quick tips, so share yours below, or share your favorite tricks for a quick hairstyle.

How To Do An Easy 6 Strand Mermaid Braid

Ismail oubarka | 2:19 PM

A nicely placed braid can add the perfect touch to almost any hairstyle. This six-strand mermaid braid is your usual braid with a different spin on it. This style is quick, easy, and it can be worn for a bunch of different occasions.

How To Do An Easy 6 Strand Mermaid Braid
How To Do An Easy 6 Strand Mermaid Braid

All you need are a few bobby pins and your favorite styling products.
What to Do:

►This style can be done with damp or dry hair. Prep your hair the night before (whether you’re doing a braid out, twist out, whatever). Leave out a section of hair in front.

►Separate your section into two smaller sections because you will be making two braids. Pin back the second section.

►Use any gel or styling aid you’d like to smooth down your edges before you begin to braid. This will give the braid a neat look. You can start it as a French braid/cornrow and continue to braid down the length of your hair.

►Repeat this with the other section.

►Gently pull at your braids to widen and fluff them out. Take one small bobby pin and place it underneath your braids horizontally. This will connect the two braids at the base. Take another small bobby pin and place it in the center of the braids vertically.

►Gather the braids and bobby pin them back. Cover the bobby pin with your hair to hide it. Voila, you’re done!

This style isn’t complicated, but it looks really great. It can be worn for almost any occasion, and you can add your own flair to it by wearing your hair down, doing an updo, or whatever you can come up with. It only takes a few minutes.

It looks great on longer hair, but ladies with shorter to medium length hair can also achieve this style. You can also use temporary hair color on the braids, such as hair chalk, or pigmented cream eyeshadow for a different look.

Semi Permanent Hair Dye and Clear Rinses for Natural Hair

Ismail oubarka | 8:46 AM

Most of us will know about semi permanent hair dyes which stain the outer shaft of the hair but wash out over time unlike some permanent hair dye that can get right into the cortex. Some naturals use semi permanents for coloring gray hair but others use it for shine/gloss…….as seen in this video. Generally with semi permanent colour, the darker your hair, the less vibrant the colour e.g red on black hair may result in just a gloss/shine without really looking red.

Did you know that you can actually find a semi permanent dye which has no actual hair dye in it?
This is what is known as a clear rinse – clear because it has no color and rinse because it rinses out. Sometimes it is mistakenly referred to as a cellophane rinse but cellophane is just the brand name for Sebastian products. Most companies that produce semi permanent hair dyes do produce a ‘clear’ product.
So what is the point of using a hair dye which actually has no hair dye?
Users of clear rinses say that it gives hair a high level shine/gloss. Some naturals also claim that clear rinses strengthen hair.

Are these claims true?
I don’t know as they are user based experiences. I did however look at the ingredients within typical products to make an assesment.
Ingredients: Sebastian Cellophane Laminates Rinse (includes ingredients for dyes that do have color – expect that the clear rinse will not have most of the color indicated in italics)
Water, PEG-12 dimethicone, benzyl alcohol, hydroxypropyl starch phosphate, propylene glycol, citric acid, phenoxyethanol, hydroxyethylcellulose, xanthan gum,D&C orange no. 4 (CI15510), hydrolysed wheat protein, hydrolysed soy protein,FD&C red no. 40 (CI 16035), FD&C yellow no. 5 (CI 19140), methylparaben, benzophenone-4, hydrolysed wheat starch, wheat amino acids, Ext.D&C violet no. 2 (CI 60730), d&c Red no. 33 (ci 17200), potassium sorbate, ethylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben, propylparaben
Water, propylene carbonate, alcohol denat, citric acid, cyclopentasiloxane, xanthan gum, dimethiconol, malic acid, tourmaline, citrine, hydrolyzed vegetable protein PG-propylsilanetriol, TEA – cocoylhydrolzed soy protein, sodium hydroxide, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, fragrance, titanium dioxide, mica, ext.violet 2
Semi Permanent Hair Dye and Clear Rinses for Natural Hair

What are the key ingredients in clear rinses?
The top ingredients in both products are water, silicones, some polymers and hydrolysed protein. Some interesting things like powdered gemstones (citrine and tourmaline) are thrown in the John Frieda product…….hmm is all I will say.
Would these ingredients create shine or strengthen hair as users claim?
Yes, silicones could increase shine and hydrolysed proteins could strengthen hair. It is probably worth mentioning that dry hair is also a distinct possibility, as a silicone rich coating on hair may not allow efficient exchange of moisture between the hair and the environment. However, as it is a rinse out product, you would be able to wash out the product easily, should it prove to be problematic.

These ingredients do not look very natural, do you have a semi permanent dye natural alternative?
Unfortunately, I haven’t seen or read about a semi permanent natural dye. Cassia is widely regarded as a clear dye, but it is probably permanent. Henna and Indigo are natural but are not semi-permanent. They do tend to fade or change in intensity over time. This is more so related to removal of excess unbound dye after initial application and later on due to loss of the dyed hair cuticle. Most natural hair dyes bind to the keratin rather than just staining it in a coating.
Have any of you tried the clear hair rinse? What are your experiences?

How to Get Your Wash and Go Curls to Hang

Ismail oubarka | 6:05 PM
By Cassidy of Natural Selection
CASS!  HOW DO I GET MY CURLS TO HANG!?”

Because natural hair has a tendency to grow up and out rather than down, this is a question I get pretty often. But today is your lucky day because I have an answer!  There is just one simple step that will help you get hang.  Check it out:
Here’s a picture of me without the Hang Technique:
How to Get Your Wash and Go Curls to Hang

Annnnd a picture of me with the Hang Technique:
How to Get Your Wash and Go Curls to Hang
In both of these photos, my hair is equal amounts wet with a very similar cream-gel styling product, but as you can see my curls hang more when I use the technique.
There are three magic ingredients for this Hang Recipe.  Here’s the rundown:

How to Get Hang

Ingredients

  • A decent amount of length:  You need a few inches of hair that can’t hang.  Yea, it’s cute and all, but your TWA can’t defy gravity.
  • Your shower: And you need to be in it with clean hair and conditioner still in dem curls.
  • Styling product: Your favorite one!  Whether it’s a cream or a gel, pick your fave and get it in the shower WITH you.

Instructions

  • Cleanse your hair as usual
  • Apply conditioner
  • If you are leaving your conditioner in (to use under a gel for example), proceed to step 4. If you are using a rinse out conditioner, pay extra attention here: when you’re rinsing tip your head forward to under the shower.  People often will have their backs to the shower and tilt their head backwards to rinse, but by tipping your head forward you’re rinsing the direction you want your hair to hang.  Here, allow me to illustrate.
Rinse your hair like this!
Rinse your hair like this!
IMG_7392
NOT like this
  • Apply your styling product to soaking wet hair.  No plopping here!  And use A LOT.  More than you think you need.
  • Turn towards the shower and let the water run through your hair.  Just a bit!  Not enough to rinse the product out, but think of the water as more of a product application tool, allowing it to set your curls and elongate your strands.
  • Now shake the crap outta your hair and VOILA!  HANG!

The next step might take a bit of practice.  Sometimes I also cup my hands and fill them with water to scrunch water into my curls, either way the key is to use water to your advantage.
Good luck and lemme know how this works for you! Shout out to Dickey of HairRules for introducing me to this technique. It has become my go-to and Lola loves it!
If you’ve got other tips to get hang, leave ‘em in the comments!

5 Reasons You’re Not Gaining Length

Ismail oubarka | 2:31 AM
5 Reasons You’re Not Gaining Length
5 Reasons You’re Not Gaining Length

I recently  received a comment that said, ‘I am stuck at 5 inches and I really just want 12 inches of hair, is that too much to ask?’ I smiled because I could relate to that need to achieve a goal hair length except I never put a number to it, I just wanted enough to make a low pony tail. Coincidentally,  my hair is also currently 12 inches, so I was sitting here with her goal length and thinking, no it is not too much to ask.
The thing I found in my journey is that the sole factor in getting my hair to move on from a ‘stuck’ position was for me to recognise the things that I was doing that were harming my hair. You are in control of whether that hair stays or moves. Here are 5 reasons why your hair does not gain length
1. You ignore breakage.
This is the top reason and if you read no further, at least read the next two paragraphs. If you have been stuck at a particular length for a long time, the most likely reason is that you have split ends which are breaking off your hair at the same rate as it is growing. The only reasonable thing to do is to trim your hair and by trim I mean cut 2-3 inches off. I could hold your hand and say just look for splits and knots and trim them off but in reality it is very had to do a search and destroy on short hair which you cannot see properly.
The second form of breakage that is largely ignored are those short little quarter inch end segment breaks that happen  with very kinky hair.  While it is not possible to fully eliminate breakage entirely, it is possible to reduce it to a minimal level by being very gentle, choosing  gentle detangling methods and being patient when handling your hair.

2. You are over-manipulating it
I will start with the obvious – puffs and afros are addictive. They are simple and cute but they are styles that for the vast majority can cause hair to tangle, knot and break.  The not so obvious is keeping a protective style in for too long. The time and effort required to unravel the strands and remove lint can cause a lot of damage.  For those with looser curls, styles like twists which are normally regarded as protective may be terrible for you  if they unravel easily and you may be tempted to constantly use a drying gel which does not help your hair.
Your hair will complain bitterly when it is over- manipulated. The top signs are breakage, tangling and knotting.  Find a happy medium with your hair.
3. You are still hunting for that magic product
There are no magic products.  There are people who have seemingly terrible product choices but great hair and similarly people with great product choices and terrible hair.

The thing to understand about hair length retention is that it is largely mechanical damage that really does you in.  Mechanical damage meaning how you physically break your hair.  Hair products mainly mask damage, what you can do is prevent damage in the first place. You and your  hair handling methods are the most important tools, over and above  products.
4. You are following someone else’s regimen
Never ever make the mistake of not listening to your hair.  If someone swears by heat training, that does not mean it will for you. If someone swears by coconut oil, that does not mean it will work for you.
There is nothing wrong with experimenting with any method, product or routine. There is something wrong with failing to see that it is not working for your hair. Always pay attention to if your hair breaks or feels less than ideal.
5. You are still using too much heat
As I said previously, length retention has a huge mechanical component to it. Heat ultimately degrades hair. For some people, regular heat use is not a problem as their hair is able to cope with it while for others, even slight heat is an issue.
Learn how your hair behaves. Do not choose style or ease over and above hair health. It may be easier to handle your hair when its curls are not as tight but consider doing a heat free method such as curl formers, braids/twists or banding.
The finer and kinkier your hair, the less likely it is to be able to take a lot of heat.
Ladies, have you been guilty of any of these?

5 Professional and Chic Natural Hair Styles for the Workplace

Ismail oubarka | 3:48 AM

Though natural hair is making more appearances in the workplace, it can still be a challenge to find that perfect “professional” hairstyle you are comfortable wearing.  Nevertheless, there are options out there — no matter how short or long your hair.  Here are just a few:
1. Mini Twists into Updo (Medium-Length Natural Hair)

With autumn around the corner, this updo is an option for those who will be wearing small twists throughout the coming months.  It is really simple to achieve and requires just a few bobby pins.  No one can tell you that you don’t look professional in this style.

2. Faux Natural Bun (Short Natural Hair)

This style is another alternative to your usual TWA, but will work best on looser textures and/or hair that is long enough to get into a tiny ponytail.  You will need an ample amount of gel, a brush, an ouchless band, bobby pins, and an afro-textured bun.

3. Flat Twists into Updo (Medium-Length to Long Natural Hair)

Now for another tutorial that involves twists — flat twists, to be precise.  This style is obviously not conservative but can work just fine in many workplaces.  (Yes, flat twists can be professional, too.)  If you want height like VeePeeJay, you will need Marley braid hair.
4. Teeny Weeny Afro with a Side Part (Short Natural Hair)

If you are tired of your usual teeny weeny afro (TWA) or don’t quite know how to make it work for the office, check out this tutorial.  The side part spruces up your style while also adding a professional touch.  You will need gel. For my kinky naturalistas, you will also need bobby pins.
5. Stretched Updo (Medium-Length Natural Hair)

This look is a great alternative for those with medium-length natural hair. It is a bit more conservative than the other looks but still very beautiful. You will start from stretched hair and need several bobby pins to achieve it. This look can also be modified for longer hair.

How do you wear your hair for the workplace?

Get the Look! Two Naturals Who Chopped Length for Shorter Do’s

Get the Look! Two Naturals Who Chopped Length for Shorter Do’s

by Portia of huneybflyy.com

The natural hair community is larger than ever and long, luscious, strands are what most women covet. Every woman is watching and waiting for any product that can help them grow their hair to unimaginable lengths. There’s always a company toting a pill, oil, or cream that will allegedly give their consumer the longest hair they’ve ever had in their life. However, there is something inspirational about a woman who desires to keep her natural hair short.

The natural hair community has become so obsessed with length, that they aren’t truly enjoying their natural hair at every stage. Some are forgetting that there is beauty in all hair lengths and textures. Some even assume that if a woman has been natural for years and her hair is not down her back, then that means that her hair is not healthy. Conversely, that is far from the truth. There are woman within the community who choose to keep their healthy natural hair fierce and short.  Brandy Gueary and LaToya Chenelle Hudson are natural ladies who disprove every short natural hair myth and rock their short locs with confidence.
Brandy Gueary

Brandy Gueary from Houston, TX has been natural for a total of 4 years. She proves that long hair isn’t everything and short hair can be very versatile. Gueary decided to do the big chop after he sister sent her YouTube videos of women and their natural hair journeys. She was very inspired and sought her own natural hair journey.
“I stayed up until 2 a.m. (on a work night) watching more hair journey videos than I could count. From then on, I was hooked and stopped relaxing my hair,” said Guery.
Gueary is no stranger to long hair. Before becoming natural, her hair was long and healthy. She received countless compliments on how beautiful her hair was. The compliments were nice, but her long hair was not as important to her as it was to others.
brandy guery long natural hair
“It was the hair I always had, so I worked to maintain it,” she said.
She originally wanted to transition her hair from being relaxed to natural by gradually trimming off the relaxer. A method some women adopt when they’d rather not go through with doing a big chop However, after seeing two different textures of hair that needed two different regimens, she opted to do the big chop. When she cut her hair, her first goal was to grow it long. What she didn’t realize was that she had the option to keep her hair short. Gueary received a lot of backlash for her decision to big chop.
“Some of the looks and comments I received after cutting my hair were surprising. People would say, ‘Why would you cut all that long hair?’ People tried to make me feel like my long hair was all I had going for myself. Others really think that their opinion and input about your choices are valid based on their life experiences. If you aren’t strong in yourself and with God, it can get to you and make you feel like your physical appearance is everything,” she said
Once Gueary’s natural hair grew to the long lengths that she was used to, she became bored. After she married and had her son, she became creative with her hair and shaved off hair from both sides of her head to form a Mohawk. She later became bored with that style as well and decided to do the big chop for the second time in January of 2014. Gueary realized that she wanted to wear her hair short for the first time in her life.

While Gueary doesn’t know how long she’ll keep her fierce, short cut, she is certainly enjoying its versatility. It might even be more versatile than longer hair. Having short hair has made Gueary much more open to different haircuts and colors. She used to have a fear of dying her hair, but now she’s lost that fear because she no longer has to worry about maintaining length. If she gets tired of looking at a certain color, she just gets rid of it by getting a new haircut and trying a new color.

Short hair is chic and Gueary proves that you don’t have to stick to one cut. Her natural hair styles consist of trying various haircuts with varied lengths, including parts. At the moment, Guery isn’t interested in growing her hair any time soon.
“My best advice is that a TWA doesn’t have to be a phase. It can be a style. It’s easy, convenient, low maintenance, and so sassy!”

LaToya Chenelle Hudson
latoya natural hair
When LaToya Chenelle Hudson decided to embrace her natural curls in 2008, she was super obsessed with having long hair in the beginning of her natural hair journey. Like most naturals, she wanted her hair to be massive. However, cutting her hair made her realize that women sometimes hide behind their hair or feel less feminine without it.
“The sheer thought of cutting our hair sometimes sends shudders down our spines. I have women come up to me every day complimenting my hair and the confidence to do it. They say ‘I wish I could, but I don’t have the nerve’ or ‘My head is big’, said Hudson.
The San Antonio, TX native is no stranger to receiving compliments from men as well. If you thought that short hair would somehow make you less appealing to the opposite sex, guess again.
latoya short natural hair
“I mean, the amount of men that give me kudos is crazy especially because you would think that most men would loathe a woman with a fade. My hubby loves it and is the one that cuts my hair”, she said.
As a fashion designer and web host, Hudson enjoys being creative and she needs to express that creativity through her hair and clothing. One day, she found herself bored with her look, so she started coloring her hair. It wasn’t long before she decided to cut her huge, fire engine red afro down to a sassy fade. While she did a big chop in 2008 to kick off her natural hair journey, she didn’t keep it short for long.
latoya short natural hair cut
As for her hair regimen, Hudson keeps it very simple. She makes sure to shampoo or co-wash her almost every day. After washing, she applies coconut oil and Paul Mitchell Barber’s Classic. Hudson also gives her hair a good brushing. She may believe in keeping her hair regimen simple, but she likes to keep people guessing when it comes to styling her funky mane.
“Short hair can be very versatile because you can do different cuts, fades, designs and colors more frequently. When my hair was longer, I found myself always trying to think of a style to create,” said Hudson.
She has certainly donned some incredible haircuts. She’s had everything from lines, stars, and hearts etched in her head. You name it and she’s probably done it or will do it one day.
latoya short natural hair cut design
“I am the queen of barber designs in my head,” she said.
Hudson also has some important advice for women who are in the TWA stage of their natural journey and for women who just want something different.
“Find a really good barber and get a good fade around the nape of your neck and ears, so that it looks neat and pretty. Many times I see new TWA’s with no shape and even with a longer fro, a great shape makes a world of difference and creates fashion forward style.”
Hudson also believes that wearing a good bold lip and a gorgeous pair of earrings doesn’t hurt either.
