It’s still hot and I don’t care what the calendar is saying some of us are still looking for surefire ways to cool down. There’s never enough shade when it’s hot and lounging near pools are great to cool down but nothing and I mean nothing is better than going to beach. Yes, black folks […]
I can't tell you the last time I purchased a bottle of traditional body lotion. I have a few that I use on my hands and feet but body lotion just doesn't do it for me anymore. They mean well, but aren't able to deliver the level of hydration that I'm searching for.
In spring and summer, I typically rely on whipped butters and oil-gels to do the job. But, when seasons change my skin really craves water-based moisture. Dry winter skin is atrocious. Lotions try their best but they mainly coat the skin rather than hydrate it intensely. Thankfully, there are a new line of products available with the power to banish dry skin forever. My facial skin used to be so darn dry. But then I discovered the art of layering hydrating serums and things were never the same. After realizing how wonderful moisturizing serums were for the face, I experimented with applying them to the body. You might remember when I encouraged everyone to make use of used sheet masks by rubbing them on the dryest part of your body. After trying this method just once, I was convinced that rich serums were meant to be slathered over our entire body.
And guess what, beauty brands also agree! Facial serums are everywhere. The problem is that they typically come in tiny bottles. Since they're not cheap, we typically don't apply serum on other parts of the body. But, if I had my way, I'd love to slather myself in hydrating serums (head to toe) before sealing with a butter, oil, or creamy lotion.
I'm also super-attracted to the idea of delivering active ingredients to the skin on my body versus only using plain ol' boring lotion. The older I get, the more I want to baby my skin. As my skin changes, it just can't maintain the moisture levels like in my younger days. I absolutely can not stand the feeling of enduring overly dry skin so I'm not taking any chances this year.
It's time to graduate from basic lotion to a move effective solution.
For all of winter, I'm interested in deeply hydrating the skin on my body before (or while) I moisturize. This means looking out for brands with higher concentrations of active ingredients like our beloved hyaluronic acid instead of just defaulting to cream lotions.
Ladies, let's graduate to the almighty body serum. What I love about these wonderful body products is how they all have different formulas depending on your body's needs. For instance, REN's all over serum is infused with alpha-hydroxy acids which are the perfect ingredients to address uneven skin tone and roughness. Certain body serums are even marketed as having anti-aging benefits.
You might notice that body serums typically have a higher price point than your other body products. That's probably because they typically come in larger sizes vs facial serums. If you aren't willing to make the financial investment just yet, may I offer a couple suggestions?
Option 1. ~ If you aren't looking for a serum with a bunch of active ingredients, just go for gel-type moisturizers instead. Neutrogena has a moisturizer that's a gel-cream hybrid. You get a full 16 oz for like five bucks and it contains hyaluronic acid as the hero ingredient. The folks on Amazon seem to dig it so I'm willing to give it a shot. If you're looking for body hydrators that aren't in cream form, I recommend you try using facial essence as a body splash prior to lotion application. Most facial essence products come in decent size bottles with enough product to use on the body.
Korean facial essences are usually loaded with active ingredients. For instance, this brand has a ton of skin-healthy ingredients, like extracts, collagen peptides, amino acids and ceramides (*immediately adds to basket*).
If you suffer from any kind of skin ailment like psoriasis, dermatitis, rosacea, or extremely dry/itchy skin, you have to treat your skin to the wonderful world of body serums.
Okay so usually I would not classify myself as not the most girliest of girls. I mean of course I love hair (If I didn’t I wouldn’t be here with yall , right?) and I do have a few other girly things that I am a fan of and one of them are the pin […]
Oh no!!! Where did that pimple come from? Why am I breaking out? What’s going on here?! Okay ladies, let’s breathe and consider some things, it might just be food allergies or may be the wrong makeup, but what if it is your hair products? Sometimes we don’t realize just how much the products that […]
You are a vision. You engulf the beauty of an angel. You are gorgeous in all heavenly splendors. You are the bride-to-be. It is only a few weeks away before you say “I do” to your Prince Charming. You have been waiting for this moment for what seems like forever. All of this day will […]
With winter around the corner, I'm scrambling for ideas on how to proactively treat my skin. Last winter, I realized that the biggest area of opportunity to really infuse moisture into the skin is before bed or early morning hours.
I can't tell you how many times I've woken up overnight feeling parched from head to toe. My lips were dry, I was thirsty, and my skin was suffering. I just don't do well at all in low humidity conditions. This winter I'm winning the war on dryness thanks to my new little beauty kit. Last year, I made sure to keep a bottle of water within arms reach of my pillow at all times. The benefits I experienced were numerous. Now I'm ready to take things to the next level.
Let's have a chat about the bedside beauty essentials that'll save my skin this winter. As soon as I recognized the need to assemble a team of hydration powerhouses, I grabbed a set of bamboo organizer boxes on Amazon to prepare. I loved how the organizers came in a variety of sizes. The larger boxes were used to store my growing supplement collection. It made an immediate difference in how neat my countertops looked compared to before.
The smaller boxes were set aside for as beauty organizers. One sits on my office desk, the other holds a few essentials in the bathroom. The last one is dedicated to the bedroom. For weeks, I've been considering putting together a collection of my favorite moisture-enhancing products in one place. The inspiration came from early mornings when I would wake up with dry lips. Or sometimes, I'll hastily wash my face before bed without going through all the steps to rehydrate properly. With this nifty little box, I could do the bare minimum to prep my skin while enjoying the comfort of my bed.
Once the boxes arrived, I began the process of identifying which products would make the most impact. Here's what I've collected so far.
\\ NYX All Over Body Balm ~ Necessary for the extra dry areas like elbows, feet, fingers, toes.
\\ Neutrogena Lip Moisturizer ~ A lightweight, ultra-hydrating balm. One of my favorite drug store purchases this year. It also has SPF which is a plus.
\\ Glossier Balm Dot Com ~ This balm is thicker which works great to protect my lips overnight.
\\ Squalane Oil ~ My absolute favorite oil to wear on my skin at night. My skin drinks it up and feels great in the morning.
\\ Moistful Collagen Stick~ It's like a balm that hydrates. I use it targetting the drier areas on my face. Sometimes I flake at the hairline or near the corners of my nose. This adds an extra layer of moisture.
\\ Kiehl's Moisturizing Eye Stick (discontinued) ~ This product is kinda like a balm in stick form. I'm experimenting with using it on the parts of my face where I get creases from my sleep habits. Also going to apply it on my smile lines and under eyes.
\\ Glossier You Fragrance ~ A fresh, light fragrance that works beautifully with your natural scent. Perfect for wearing to bed.
\\ Gua Sha Facial Massage Tool ~ Sometimes, when I get out of bed, I rush to my computer and get straight to work. Going forward, I'd like to depuff my face in bed before my feet hit the ground. That's one less thing to worry about from my morning to-do list.
\\ Glow Recipe Sleeping Mask ~ A water-based hydration for when my skin is really parched. This is a cult-classic in Korean skincare industry.
\\ Gel Eye Masks ~ I don't wear eye masks as much as I'd like. Having these in my beauty box will serve as a reminder for me to actually use them.
\\ A Tiny Roller Ball ~ Liquid essence has to be my favorite type of moisturizing product. It's like water but ultra-nourishing. When I used my little rollerballs consistently, I noticed an improvement in fine lines and increased plumpness. Definitely need to get back to doing that again.
Part of the reason I selected these items is due to their convenient size combined with their level of effectiveness. I don't plan on only using them in the middle of the night or before bed. Whenever I'm lazily scrolling through my phone in the bed, I can break out my eye masks or rehydrate my driest areas with the collagen stick. While watching IG stories, I can give myself a gua sha massage in bed. An awesome thing about this moisture emergency kit is that it helps me get more use of my favorite products.
It's convenient. It's practical. It's effective.
Other beside beauty essentials that I forgot to mention include our beloved humidifier and a small bottle of water. What makes this collection special is they all have their unique strengths. The further we get into winter, the most items I'll use from my box. I'm prepared for everything and anything.

When you go to the store for hair products, you are probably bombarded by the plethora of brands and choices on each aisle. Let’s cut out the middle man and head to the kitchen for a quick and easy do-it-yourself homemade hair conditioner. But first, let us examine why we need to deep condition. When you […]
To get moisturized hair, you really don’t have to spend all your money on those pricey products that claim to give your hair “the business”. Whenever you need that refresher, look no further than your kitchen and refrigerator. Buying just ingredients rather than whole products can last you much longer versus buying moisturizing products that […]
I think all of us can agree that we love to change our hair up from time to time. We add color, install mermaid length poetic justice braids, flat iron straight, the point is we love to experiment with different looks and why not? Our beautiful hair textures whether kinky, curly, or wavy allows for […]
Alright now, let's get down to BUSINESS! In part two of my deep-dive into the Zotos Professional All About Curls collection (and how it compares to DevaCurl), we're going all in on styling products.
Now, I love me some cleansers and conditioners, but styling products are my JAM! My hair was ready to put these products through the ringer, too! On one head, I've got all the bases covered — low porosity, fifty-leven different textures, disrespectful shrinkage, and an area that is perpetually frizzy, no matter what I do.
So yeah, let's get to it... :::Birdman hand rub:::

Bouncy Cream
Cost $9.99 - $10.99 for 5.1oz (I find that online, All About Curls tends to be about $1 cheaper than in-store)
Polyquaternium-55: Styling agent and hair fixative polymer that provides a smooth, moisturized feel to the hair.
The Good
To be quite honest, I've never really "got" styling creams. I just wrote them off as not for me, because of how wildly my hair textures vary. Not once did I ever stop and consider whether a styling cream could really "do" anything for my hair. My default assumption was that styling creams were meant for looser textures and finer hair.
I.
Was.
Wrong.
I fell madly in love with the Bouncy Cream, so much so that I've already re-upped on another tube. It works unlike anything that I've ever used before — locking my curl pattern into place and creating a smooth canvas for the High Definition Gel to swoop in and seal the deal. It does an amazing job at warding off-frizz, and absolutely is the driving force behind why my wash and go's still look amazing several days later.
I bought another tube of Bouncy Cream before I even came close to running out — that's how good this stuff is.
So umm, Zotos... any chances of the Bouncy Cream coming in salon sizes with a pump? 👀 Asking for a friend (that is me).
The Bad
Nothing, nothing, and more nothing. Not a single thing wrong with the Bouncy Cream — except that it doesn't come in salon sizes yet (I'm gonna just put that into the atmosphere). 🙏🏽
Left: DevaCurl. Right: All About Curls
The Bottom Line | DevaCurl Comparison
On the surface, I understand why some people gravitate toward the DevaCurl Styling Cream. It feels nice and silky, and goes on the hair smoothly. But that's honestly where the comparison to the Bouncy Cream ends. The DevaCurl Styling Cream did nothing to my hair except make it feel weird and coated.
I know some of you guys will say that I should try the Supercream for better results, but at this point, I'd rather just stick with what I know works — for a fraction of the price. Plus, I firmly believe that Zotos got Bouncy Cream right on the first try... and if it ain't broke, you shouldn't have to fix it (with a second iteration of the same product).
High Definition Gel
Cost $9.99 - $10.99 for 15oz (I find that online, All About Curls tends to be about $1 cheaper than in-store)
Propylene Glycol: Humectant that improves moisture binding activity which results in silky smooth hair.
Acrylates Copolymer: Light film forming hair fixative.
Aminomethy Propanol: A small molecular weight buffering agent and pH adjuster.
Glycerin: Generally vegetable-based humectant that absorbs and retains moisture from the air.
PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil: Polyethylene glycol derivative of castor oil used to help reduce the surface tension of ingredients, while helping ingredients mix that normally would not.
Carbomer: Chemical composed of acrylic acid monomers that acts as a viscosity controlling agent (thickener).
The Good
Oh.
My.
Goodness.
Yall. LISTEN.
I just found my new favorite hair gel. Like, instant HG status — forreal. I wasn't expecting it. I wasn't even checking for it like that. I definitely wasn't expecting to fall in love. But that's how love works, right? Here you are just living your best life, minding your business and then BAM! 💥 Love.
These curls are about 5 days old and poppin'!
I have used the High Definition Gel in conjunction with Bouncy Cream and the Daily Cream Conditioner for my last 4-5 wash and go's and I kid you not — my hair looks the better than it does with my WetLine and EcoStyler faves. I just emptied my first bottle of High Definition Gel, and I purchased two more in its place. Yes, it's that good.
For me, the perfect gel is one that tames my multiple textures, brings out my natural definition, and forms a gel cast that fades to reveal supple, plump curls. The All About Curls High Definition Gel hits all those notes and then some. It doesn't flake, doesn't leave my hair feeling dry, and gives me results that last for several days without needing a refresh.
I'm telling you guys now — don't be surprised when you see the High Definition Gel on my Christina's Choice list.
The Bad
Absolutely nothing. Just run me my salon size, please! 😬
The Bottom Line | DevaCurl Comparison
Alright you guys, I'll be honest. I get why some people like DevaCurl styling products, namely the Ultra Defining Gel. On the Deva side, 2/3 of my hair looked great. It had a nice shine, felt good (on the first day), and had some nice bounce. But that top 1/3? All the nope. Plus, in the days that followed, my hair felt horribly straw-like and rough.
On the other hand, the All About Curls side gave me brilliant shine, great definition, and a nice feel all over — not just on my looser, normal porosity sections. And for that, All About Curls High Definition Gel is the absolute winner. I don't have time to use different products in different sections, and the High Definition Gel delivered great results across every single type and texture in my head.
Not to mention, my full-sized bottle (15oz) of High Definition Gel cost the same as the 3oz travel-sized bottle of DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel.
Boosting Foam
Cost $9.99 - $10.99 for 6.7oz (I find that online, All About Curls tends to be about $1 cheaper than in-store)
PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil: Hydrogenated Castor Oil: Polyethylene glycol derivative of castor oil used to help reduce the surface tension of ingredients, while helping ingredients mix that normally would not.
Polyquaternium-46:Polymeric quaternary ammonium salt used as an antistatic agent and hair fixative (for hold).
VP/VA Copolymer: Polymer used as a film forming fixative (to create a cast and hold).
Lycium Barbarium Fruit Extract: Aka goji berry extract. Works as an anti-oxidant and softening agent.
Willowbark Extract: Extract containing salicin, known to have soothing properties for the skin.
Black Currant Fruit Extract: Rich in GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) which is a fatty acid that promotes healthy growth of skin and hair. Nourishes scalp and skin while helping to regulate conditions like eczema and psoriasis that cause flaking.
The Good, the Bad, and the Bottom Line
To be quite honest, I don't have a whole lot to say about the Boosting Foam. I used it for one wash and go, paired with the Soft Definition Gel. It wasn't a bad combination — it just wasn't my Bouncy Cream x High Definition jam, ya know?
The Boosting Foam didn't dry out my hair, or flake. But at the same time, it didn't give me the ping pang pow I was looking for. It's not a bad product, just not my fave, ya know?
I'm curious to see how the Boosting Foam would work on a rod set, so I'll eventually circle back around to update you guys on that. If you have any experience with the Boosting Foam, share with me in the comments below!
Soft Definition Gel
Cost $9.99 - $10.99 for 15oz (I find that online, All About Curls tends to be about $1 cheaper than in-store)
VP/VA Copolymer: Polymer used as a film forming fixative (to create a cast and hold).
Triethanolamine: Buffering agent and pH adjuster that assists in emulsion (assisting in the mixture of oil and water ingredients).
Hydrolyzed Keratin: Protein that keeps hair strong and pliable. Helps to replace the amino acid cysteine (the main amino acid lost in hair handling and chemical processing). When keratin or any protein is hydrolyzed, the molecules are broken down and small enough to go beyond the cuticle and penetrate the hair shaft — strengthening all three layers of the hair.
Cocodimonium Hydroxypropyl Hydrolyzed Keratin: Cationic (positively charged) conditioning agent derived from keratin that adds gloss and shine while providing a silky soft feeling.
Benzophenone-4: UVB and UVA protectant that filters and blocks out harmful UV rays.
Oleth-20:Compound used to help reduce surface tension of formulas and get ingredients to dissolve in liquids that normally would not. Oleth-20 helps ingredients better penetrate the hair as well.
The Good, the Bad, and the Bottom Line
Again, my experience with the Soft Definition Gel is limited. I used it three times— once in the above mentioned combo with the Boosting Foam, another time to quickly refresh my hair, and a third time to slick my hair back for a bun.
All in all, it's a solid gel — just not my High Definition jam. Although I will admit, when it came time to call an audible as I got ready to go out to dinner, the Soft Definition Gel came in super clutch. A little water, a little Soft Definition Gel and a handful of bobby pins took me from a dry, bent bun to this:
Will I finish out the bottle, yes! Will it make it a part of my regular rotation? Not as long as Zotos keeps the High Definition Gel in stock!
Well guys, that's it for me and the 411 on the All About Curls collection! As you can see, I've definitely found some new holy grails to add to my collection. And based on the results of my little experiment, I will wholeheartedly recommend All About Curls over DevaCurl all day, EVERY DAY.
From price to performance, All About Curls by Zotos Professional runs circles around DevaCurl. I truly hope that Zotos Professional keeps the All About Curls line around for years to come — and produces their products in SALON SIZE so ya girl can stock up. Pleeeeeeeeeease!!! Team Zotos, if you're reading this, the curly girls need 33.8oz! 🙏🏽
