Fit By Spring! Hack Your Weight Loss with the Workout that Burns More Fat Than Jogging

Ismail oubarka | 6:26 AM
We're approximately 60 days away from spring.  That's a little over 8 weeks.  And that's just enough time to trim down in time for warmer weather.  I dunno about you but this recent cold spell has been a disaster for my fitness journey.

Cold weather makes me eat more, wear oversized clothes, and move less.  These three ingredients create the perfect environment for extra weight to creep in.  With only 8 weeks left until we're wearing normal clothes again, it's time to ramp up our fat burning.

And I've got the perfect workout to do it.  Before you break out your jogging shoes, I want to remind you there's better workout that's scientifically proven to burn more fat more quickly.
But first, let me share a story.  I recently went for a wellness checkup.  Before seeing the doctor, the nurse collected basic data to determine my health status.  After taking my blood pressure, she measured my current heart rate.  Once the result appeared she asked, "are you a runner?"

I let a small laugh and asked her why she would ask such a thing?  She then advised me that my resting heart rate was similar to others who lead an active lifestyle. According to Google, my heart beats per minute fell in the same range as well trained athletes.  I am......not a well-trained athlete.  Far from it.

In fact, I describe myself as leading a sedentary lifestyle.  I'm home most days and if I'm working all day, I'll barely get any steps logged in my Fitbit.  So why was my heart rate at such a healthy level?  I'll tell you why! It's because, when I'm trapped in the house all day, my only exercise comes in the form of rebounding on my mini-trampoline.   Lately, I've been using it as a stress-relieving/idea generating tool.  Whenever I'm stuck and don't feel energized, I bounce for a few minutes to generate momentum. When I get the blood flowing again, ideas form and my mood gets an instant lift.

Somehow, those little jumping sessions must have an incredible impact on my heart health.  That's the only explanation I could think of.

It turns out that my hypothesis was probably correct.  Because a study conducted in 2016 showed that working out on a trampoline was even more effective than running when it comes to conditioning the heart.  And, better yet, those who rebounded regularly burned more fat than their counterparts who were on a running regimen.

Study participants were broken up into 2 groups--runners and rebounders.  Both groups were asked to maintain their normal eating and lifestyle habits for 8 weeks. During those 8 weeks,  participants worked out 3 days a week for 30 minutes a day.  Oxygen consumption capacity (amount of oxygen processed by the body) was found to be greater in the group that rebounded versus the runners.  In fact, the oxygen capacity of the trampoline group was double that of those who ran for 30 minutes.

Best of all, they noted that those who worked out on a trampoline experienced a 31.6% reduction in body fat compared to a 20% reduction in the runners.

I've experienced rapid toning and fat loss when I consistently rebound for 30 or more minutes a day while watching my favorite shows. I barely broke a sweat because bouncing not that difficult of a workout.

I made the investment and purchased a high quality rebouder and I don't regret my decision one bit.  At the time, I read a bunch of claims about how rebounding works every single muscle and cell in the body using a simple movement and I took their word for it.  But now, we have published studies that support the incredible benefits of this wonderful exercise.  And that heart rate reading reinforces that I made the right decision.

If you're one of those people who like to find ways to hack life (get more from what you put in), then you should take a serious look at the wonderful world of rebounding.  Imagine how powerful it'll be to strength train while utilizing rebounding as your cardio.

If bouncing on a trampoline isn't your thing, but you still want to trim the maximum amount fat by spring, try this type of workout instead.

STYLE INSPO | The Perfect Pairing of Formal & Casual Pieces.

Ismail oubarka | 12:40 PM
I have a soft spot for looks that can be worn almost anywhere.  Recently, I found some wonderful inspiration via @seretix's Instagram. Actually, this look wasn't posted on her feed, it was a simple snapshot shared via a 10-second story.

When you browse her feed, you'll notice that Seretix has an impeccable sense of style.  Dressing well seems to come naturally to her.  While I love every single thing she wears, some of her styling options are more aspirational than wearable.

But as soon as this look appeared on my phone, I instantly wanted to recreate it.
Obviously, the statement piece of this outfit is the gorgeous camel coat.  But my eyes were immediately drawn to the gorgeous stripped blouse.  I love that top so much because it's reminiscent of Rihanna's Boyfriend Shirt outfit that I raved about a while back.  The striped buttoned-up shirt/blouse is an ultimate staple piece that everyone should have in their closet.  I even loved when Jasmine Tookes recreated a similar look using a striped shirt with a more feminine silhouette.

The oversized coat is absolutely stunning.  A few years back, camel coats were a huge trend.  Seretix reminds us of how timeless these pieces are.  For this look, the coat is the ultimate accessory. I noticed that she even opted to leave out the stunning jewelry she often sports with her other outfits.

She balances the look by wearing distressed jeans. This helps break up the formality of the satin blouse and structured coat.  Unfortunately, Seretix didn't tag any of her outfit pieces but I've found a striped that I must own.  It looks a bit more like Rihanna's boyfriend shirt and that's perfectly fine.  I've had this blouse on my wish list for far too long.

Beet Juice Gives You Glowing Skin. Here's Why.

Ismail oubarka | 7:11 AM
The other day, an image flashed across my Instagram stories that I immediately screen grabbed.  It featured Kayla Nicole, the fiance of NFL superstar, Travis Kelce.  One thing about this woman is that she has amazing skin.  In most of her stories, she's either sporting no makeup or ultra-natural makeup looks.

Thankfully, I happened to be on Instagram the day that she revealed her number one skin secret.
Instead of displaying her everyday products, she featured her ultimate skin enhancing beverage.  Kayla proclaimed that beet juice is her #1 skin care favorite.  After capturing the image, I began my research.  I needed to know exactly why beet juice was so beneficial to the skin.

The first and most obvious quality about beet juice is its deep reddish-violet color.  We know that fruits and veggies with rich color are loaded with antioxidants.  Beets are no exception.  They contain ascorbic acid (vitamin C), carotenoids + flavonoids (both are phytonutrients), and betalains (antioxidants).  The betalains are not only antioxidant-rich, they also have superb anti-inflammatory properties.

Anything anti-inflammatory is amazing for the skin.  Why? Because it helps combat acne flare-ups which are the manifestation of inflammation on the skin's surface. When you research the benefits of beets for the skin, the first thing that pops up is how great it works to combat and prevent acne breakouts.  I found several instances where folks claimed that beet juice helped clear their acne.

I also stumbled on a study that determined that beet juice had greater antioxidant power than other well-known vegetable juices like tomato, carrot, orange or pineapple.  It ranked higher than 22 other fruits/veggies.  The only fruit studied that surpassed beets in their antioxidant power were pomegranates.  Pomegranates are great but can be a bit pricey when they aren't in season.  Good thing beets are fairly affordable and available year round.

Best of all, beets yield a high amount of juice so it's easy to enjoy shots of beet juice at home.  Or I might grab these premade organic beet juices available on Amazon.

By the way, the study I referred to earlier showed that beet juice as an array of beneficial properties beyond that of beautiful skin like heart protection and cognitive (brain function) enhancement, just to name a few. So even if your skin is fine, beet juice can protect our skin cells from free radicals while keeping our bodies younger longer.

I didn't even touch on the blood flow benefits of drinking beets.  When we talk about anti-aging and promoting a youthful glow, enhanced blood flow HAS to be a part of the conversations.

I'm running out and buying a bunch of organic beets today.  I'm not a huge fan of beets but knowing what I know now, I'll make sure to get them in my diet on a regular basis.   If you decide to start juicing beets, don't throw out the leaves & stems because those are chock full of nutrition as well.

Let's all thank Kayla for reminding us of this amazing, skin enhancing, superfood.

The Pitfalls of Being an Entrepreneur that No One Talks About.

Ismail oubarka | 5:46 AM
I'm currently in the early stages of (hopefully) purchasing an investment property.  As a sat across the table from my mortgage advisor, I was told that my 2017 tax returns would be a major factor in whether I qualify to take on the financial burden of yet another mortgage.

Because I'm self-employed, lenders are a bit more cautious to loan me money. While sitting across the table from her, I reflected on my entrepreneurial journey.  Perhaps some of you would like to work for yourself one day.  We sometimes daydream about all the amazing wonders of self-employment. Nowadays, the dream of becoming an entrepreneur is heavily glamourized. But we should also discuss some of the realities of this type of lifestyle.
YOUR SECURITY BLANKET IS GONE
The first milestone that you'll experience once leaving your job is that first Friday that passes with no direct deposit.  I'll never forget that feeling of logging into my checking account on paycheck Friday and realizing that I'd be responsible for generating my income from now on.

If at all possible, I recommend that you save around one year of expenses before taking your big leap.  I saved by setting up automatic drafts into a specified savings account.  This means less disposable income leading up to the decision.  I didn't care. Too me, freedom was more important than having a lot of disposable income.  I also believed that eventually, my income would recover.

Once I got past the shock of not getting paid, I had to overcome the next obstacle.....making money.

My plan of action was simple.

Mimic the actions of others who were making money in a similar way.  Basically, I learned from others who had online e-commerce stores.  Here's what I realized.  My actions when I still had a full-time job were very different once that paycheck was gone.  When we still have a security (financial) blanket, we limit ourselves dramatically.  We think small and do the absolute minimum.  But when our livelihood depends on our success, our actions shift.  If they don't, then we'll find ourselves back on the job market.

You can no longer take these tiny little baby steps that you're used to.  Your side hustle must now pay the bills.  I found it necessary to take more risks and focus on actions that had a greater impact on the bottom line.  If you can take on this mindset before you quit your job, you save yourself a lot of heartaches.

YOUR BUSINESS MAY NOT PERFORM
Another thing you'll have to deal with as an entrepreneur is when your business doesn't make money or when sales dip dramatically.  I've had times when sales suddenly decline out of nowhere. I wasn't sure what caused it and if sales would ever come back.  Now, that I've entered my 3rd year of working for myself, I realize that this is part of a cycle.  Whenever I want to boost revenue, I do two things:

  1.  Shift my mindset to focus on creating the outcome I want.
  2. I take a lot of action.  I do everything I can think of to turn things around.
Low sales don't feel good but I've come to realize that it's part of the process.  Sometimes revenue exceeds expectations, sometimes not.  As an entrepreneur, it's important to remember that we have control over the results.  When we work for an employer, we often feel powerless over our income. Our paycheck rarely fluctuates and if we want more, we're at the mercy of the decision makers.   We have to shake this mindset when working for ourselves and realize that our results are up to us.

FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS WILL MAKE YOU JUMP THROUGH HOOPS
Lastly, the other reality you'll face as an entrepreneur is what I'm dealing with now.  In order to be seen as financially stable by the banking industry, we must show lots of income and growth.  If I worked at a job, earning the same salary for 2 years, that would probably be no problem.  But the same principle doesn't apply to an entrepreneur.  We must always be growing our bottom line.   So if you plan on making any big purchases within 2-5 years after transitioning to your business full time, please keep that in mind as motivation to push yourself harder.  Now that I'm aware of this higher standard, I'm determined to 10X my results.

With all of this said, I wouldn't give up my experience over the past couple of years of anything.  All of those times of concern about how to launch + run a successful business is nothing compared to the highs that I've experienced over the last 2 years.  Nothing compares to having complete freedom over your time.  Not to mention that there's no cap on your earning potential.  It doesn't exist.  Stress levels are much lower and the highs are absolutely extraordinary.

Growing Long Natural Hair & Getting Healthy: Camille Rose Naturals Super Food Vitamins

Ismail oubarka | 11:16 AM
Growing Long Natural Hair and Getting Healthy with Camille Rose Naturals Super Food Vitamins
The holidays are over. Time for me to be my #BestSelf!
It's 2018, and I've decided to walk in my truth: I'm obsessed with vitamins and supplements.

Seriously, if you saw my vitamin stash, you'd probably give me the Luvvie judgey face.

That's why when I learned about the Camille Rose Naturals Super Foods vitamin, I literally blew my lid - for a few different reasons.

One, Janell Stephens (Camille Rose Naturals founder) is an OG in the natural hair game. Camille Rose Naturals was one of the earliest brands that catered specifically to us, and was one of the first to land inside big box stores like Target. Since then, Janell has expanded her haircare line and even made a foray into home and health.

Did you read that last section? HOME AND HEALTH.

I've been cleaning my house with the Marcona Marnier All Purpose Cleaner for the past few weeks, and let me tell you - it's literally amazing. But that's another story for Instagram.

Let's get into this health bit.

I'm tryna be drippin' in finesse 90 days from now!
About Super Foods
In Target stores all across the country, Camille Rose Naturals has launched Super Foods, a vegan vitamin blend aimed at growing longer, stronger hair and nails.

Super Foods contains your usual suspects like Vitamins A and E, biotin, folic acid, and MSM. But Janell and Camille Rose Naturals are changing the game in two MAJOR areas - ingredients and affordability. Super Foods retails for $20 on the Camille Rose Naturals website and in Target stores. And what's so affordable about that? Each bottle contains 60 servings. You only need 1 Super Foods vitamin per day.

You read that right - each bottle will last you 2 months.

But what really excites me about Super Foods? Janell and her team kicked things up a notch in the ingredients department - adding in spirulina, alfalfa, kelp, collagen, bamboo, and flaxseed to an already robust hair growth vitamin.

The full ingredient list. Click to expand.
In case you don't know why those are such a big deal, let me break down a few thangs about these ingredients for you:

Spirulina
Spirulina is isn't a grass, leaf, root, stem, or extract of any sort. Surprisingly enough, it's a cyanobacteria commonly known as Blue Green Algae. Spirulina is comprised of over 70% protein, along with high amounts of Vitamins A, B-12, and E - making it the perfect green ingredient to power healthy hair and nail growth (and regrowth in thinning areas).Word on the street is it restores youthful vitality and glow to skin, too!

Alfalfa
This powerful sprout is rich in Vitamins A, B, C, E, and K, plus calcium, carotene, iron, potassium, and zinc - and works to stop hair loss in its tracks. When taken regularly, alfalfa is believed to strengthen the roots of the hair, preventing or slowing hair loss while accelerating growth.

Collagen
I've talked about the benefits of collagen before - but in case you need a quick refresher, here you go! Collagen types 1 and 3 are often paired together, as they support skin, muscles, bone health, and hair and nail growth - thanks to the 19 amino acids present and their essential functions. Over 90% of the collagen in the body is contains types 1 and 3. The amino acids present in these collagen types help promote a healthy metabolism (study), stabilize collagen production in the body, and build protein within the body (hey muscles and hair!).

Bamboo
Bamboo isn't just great as an extract - but it's a phenomenal supplement, too! Bamboo has the highest amount of silica found in any plant - up to 70%. Silica is a key ingredient for hair and skin health that naturally occurs in our bodies - but depletes as we age. Supplementing with bamboo is an all natural, plant-based way to boost collagen production, restore luster and health to hair, accelerate hair growth, and renew skin.

Flaxseed
Flaxseeds are like the gift that keeps on giving. Not only can you use them for gel and oil, but as a supplement, these Omega-3 an Vitamin E rich seedlings have a number of benefits for hair and scalp. Rich in antioxidants, flaxseeds help fight free radical damage on the hair and skin - reducing signs of aging, wrinkles, brittleness, and dryness. Flaxseeds also help improve the elasticity of hair and skin, and over time, can help ease symptoms of dandruff, eczema, and psoriasis.

Now, let's get on with the good stuff!
