Tell us where you are from, the early years of your childhood and what influenced your direction towards music?

I was born in Cameroon and was there until I was 13. My dad had a big record collection so I was always listening to all types of music. My mom plays piano and she started teaching me to play when I was 6. They were both a big influence on me and it’s hard to imagine not being involved in music.

First memory of music?

Ahh, that would be playing piano with my mom and singing with my sisters…

What would you say to those who don’t have the positive reinforcement of family or and friends when pursuing a passion?

The key is to keep getting out there in the community and you will eventually meet like-minded people who can support you and give you good feedback. Try to surround yourself with people who are supportive and who believe in you, whether they are people you talk to in person or find online.

If you could only pick 3 albums to listen to for the rest of your life, which 3 would it be?

Wow, that’s tough. There are so many great records but since I have to pick…I’d say “Off The Wall” by Michael Jackson, “Nina Simone Sings The Blues” by Nina Simone, and “Faith” by George Michael.

Most embarrassing moments on stage?

Well, I really like to move around on stage. There was this one time I went to one side of the stage and was singing to the crowd. When I tried to go to the other side, the cord on the microphone got caught on one of the speakers and pulled me back so I just went back to that side and played it off. It was quite funny.

Musically the decade you are most inspired by and why?

The 1970s are hard to beat in terms of music because it seems like everything that came out during that time was, musically and lyrically, gold.

Is there a genre of music or an artist you would like to collaborate with that may surprise your fans?

Country music! Seriously, I love country! I think eventually I’d like to release a country record.

If you could could spend the weekend with anyone (past or present) who would it be and why?

I’m going to say Maya Angelou because I think we could have great conversations full of laughter, tears and wisdom. I feel like I would be a changed person after hanging out with her.

Touring can be strenuous, do you have a regimen regarding food and/or exercise to help you stay energized.

My show is high energy and I’m dancing and jumping on stage so that’s all the exercise I need. Honestly, my regimen is to sleep whenever and wherever possible – haha. With touring, you’re always on the go and the most important thing is to rest your body and your voice so you can be ready for the next show.

How would you describe your personal fashion style?

Eclectic! For shows I like a rock-n-roll look: leather, shredded jackets, lots of jewelry or other metallic accessories. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like to wear skirts or dresses – I love pretty patterns and flowing dresses, especially for summer. I love mixing masculine and feminine styles.

What advice would you give to people who might be afraid to show their true fashion sense or natural hair for fear of being judged by others?

To keep being yourself. Only you know what feels right in your body. I think if you’re confident, you can pull off anything.

What would you say to others who judge individuals negatively for their personal fashion style.

I don’t really have anything to say to negativity. I believe in karma and that whatever you put out in the universe comes back to you, so I like to stay positive and keep positive things and people around me.

Favorite stores and places to shop for vintage or thrift

There’s a shop in Sacramento called CUFFS that has the coolest vintage and also some newer pieces. I always go there when I’m in town and I’m constantly on their Instagram page.

Current music playlist and favorite book

In my current playlist, I’m listening to a lot of Zac Brown Band. I recently started reading a new book every week, and my favorite book is “1984” by George Orwell.

Favorite restaurant and dish you would not want to live without

Lately, I love Home State, which is a Texan restaurant in Los Angeles. As far as a specific dish, I love plantains and I could eat them everyday.

What is the best piece of advice or life lesson you have learned regarding your work?

Hmm, the best advice or life lesson…. I would say is to stay true to yourself and have fun. If something isn’t enhancing your life and making you happy, you shouldn’t be doing it.

What keeps you motivated?

I’ve been blessed and lucky in my life to be able to do what makes me happy for a living. My family and friends keep me motivated and I’m always trying to get better at everything I do.

Future projects and where can we find you?

I’m starting work on a new album and am planning on a US-West Coast and Europe tour this Fall. Keep an eye onalloevolution.com or my social media accounts @andyallo for updates. I just partnered with DevaCurl as their Ambassador which is really exciting because I’ve been using their products on my hair for over a year so there’ll be some new and cool things we’re doing together. I also have a Fronatics Club where fans can join for free to win exclusive prizes and rewards.
