The other day I was griping to a friend about the struggle to get my eyeliner to stay on. I told her about my oily eyelids and blamed them for disappearing liner. My friend, who doesn't suffer from this scenario, told me that she couldn't relate. So I started looking for the answer elsewhere.
The ideal outcome is to do my makeup once and have it last throughout the day. Even if I have to do a little more work up front, I'm o.k, as long as I get the results I'm looking for.
A brief search revealed the answer.
One layer of liner simply isn't enough. Especially if you suffer from oily lids as I do. Based on the tips I've read, a long-lasting liner requires us to employ the layering method. And it goes a little something like this:
First, we prep the lids to properly receive product using eyelid primer. I gotta confess that I wasn't always using eye primer, especially when wearing a more natural look. But after realizing the error of my ways, I promise to wear primer from now on.
One the primer is on, I brush the lid with a powder that matches my skin tone to help set the product. This also ensures that any potential oil is quickly absorbed.
Then, I'd apply liner as normal.
The next step is where it gets interesting. We now set the eyeliner by going over your drawn line with black eyeshadow using a liner brush. You can substitute black shadow for translucent powder. Whatever you do, don't skip this powder step. Powder is the meat to your all-day liner sandwich.
Next, we really get serious. This is where we re-line our eye once again. At this point, your liner is now 3 layers deep (liner, black shadow/powder, liner). Applying three layers of product is far superior to my basic method of lining unprimed lids and walking out the door.
Lastly, you want to make sure you're using liners meant to last longer on the skin. In the past, I didn't pay much attention but now I'm making sure to only reach for gel liners or waterproof formulas which were bred to have extra long lasting power.
There it is. I've revealed the secrets. Actually, it wasn't really a secret because makeup artists have been using the liner-layering method for years. But now we know, and now we can rock the cat-eye all day long.
