Read This if You Ever Thought About Starting a Blog.

Recently, Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay launched her new website/blog.  Obviously, I was super excited about her newest endeavor, but in the back of my mind I was thinking, "why launch a blog in 2020?"  Years ago, having a blog was a big deal.  Before social medial, blogging was the main way to build your audience.

Once social media came along, blogging kinda diminished in popularity.  I've even heard people say that "blogging is dead."  If you want to make your mark online, social medial is the way to go.   But, I'm noticing a slight trend in the emergence of blog-style websites.  Kortney Kardashian just launched her blog-magazine in 2019.  One expert who often told influencers to focus on short-form social media content has recently changed his tune.  Now, he's encouraging social media influencers to also launch a blog.

Why?

Because, while social media is excellent for growth and visibility, you're at the mercy of the platform.  Instagram is constantly limiting organic reach and visibility. Your audience isn't really yours because Instagram decides (and limits) who sees your content.  While blogs aren't as popular as they used to be, they are still a viable platform.

I get emails and messages from readers interested in starting their own blog.  I support the idea cause blogging can be a rewarding experience that can open doors in the future.  If starting a blog is something that you've been contemplating, keep reading to pick up a few tips and tricks on how to thrive as a new blogger.
Tip #1 Start.
Your new blog might become a personal space where you share your thoughts and ideas with a dedicated group of readers.  Or, your blog might just become the stepping stone that could help provide opportunities that you've never thought possible.  How will you know which path your blog will take?  You don't.  And that's the exciting part.

If the small still voice inside you has been hinting--or screaming at you to start your blog (or Youtube page or whatever), then start!  That little voice keeps urging you because your subconscious wants to experience this form of creative expression.   Maybe your heart seeks the therapeutic feeling of bringing your inner thoughts out into the real world.  Many of us feel like we have a message or a unique perspective to share with the world.  Blogging gives you that opportunity.  Even if no one ever reads your articles, it feels amazing to express yourself freely.

But alas, many people carry around the desire to create content online without ever making it a reality.  The desire to launch a website is like a tiny seed.  Within a seed lies (very real) possibility of producing ample amounts of fruit.  But none of that will ever happen if the seed is never planted.   By the time quarantine is behind us and we go back to our "normal" lives, you'll be glad that you created something tangible that will outlast the current circumstances.

Tip #2 Continue.
Once you actually launch your website, you've opened the door to unlimited possibilities.  What happens next will depend on the direction you decide to go.  I know a few people who launched blogs years ago and gave up on their hobby after a short period of time.  Perhaps it's because they didn't experience the level of results they were expecting.  Blogging, just like any new endeavor, is a long play game.  The early days are usually the toughest.  At first, no one knows your blog exists so you have to clock in enough hours to build momentum.

I was at a conference once and one of the speakers shared a story of how she grew her social media following.  Before starting her path to over 100k followers, she made a deal with herself to keep working on her craft for an entire year before deciding whether or not her efforts were paying off.   She understood the importance of allowing enough time for her results to compound.  We might not reach our goals right away but if you stay consistent, you will experience exponential growth.  Take on this philosophy of staying consistent with your new endeavor for at least a year and see where this journey takes you.

Tip #3 Evolve
If your desire is to utilize your blog as a means to help generate passive income, you'll have to make a few adjustments to your strategy.  This is the point where you transition from blogging as a hobby to becoming a semi-pro.  Lots of people experience great income potential from blogging.  But, in order to do so, you have to become a student of blogging at a higher level.  You have to find ways to constantly bring more eyes to your website.  Once the eyes are there, that audience can be leveraged into an income stream.    The larger your audience, the more you can earn.   Why does the NFL charge millions of dollars for Super Bowl ads?  Because there are a large number of eyes glued to the screen during the commercial breaks.  Typically, your blogging audience will grow as your production value grows. So, as you evolve, consider investing time and money to enhance the look and feel of your blog.  Not only will your current audience love it, your first time visitors will also be more likely to return.

These 3 simple tips can be applied to a YouTube Channel, your IG feed, or whatever online space you create.  Starting is like planting a tiny seed.  From there, you can decide how big or small you want to your project to become.
