I Got My MicroNutrient Levels Tested. Here's My Plan of Action

Ismail oubarka | 8:14 AM
Last month, I spontaneously walked into a lab testing center and asked for them to conduct a complete micronutrient blood test.  This is something that I've thought about doing for a long time.  After turning 40, I understand that my body isn't operating the same as it did 2 decades ago.  I had a bunch of questions in my mind and I wanted answers.  Which vitamins was I deficient in? How was my metabolism functioning? What changes did I need to make to my diet to be the healthiest version of myself?
The process was pretty straight forward.  I visited my local AnyLabTestNow location and requested the Spectracell Micronutrient test.  I opted for this test because I wanted a baseline on where I stood with my vitamin and mineral absorption.  This test is pretty comprehensive. It's also not cheap.  At $400.00 I considered it an investment in my overall health.  What if I was deficient in certain nutrients without even knowing?  Long term deficiencies can lead to greater health problems later on so I wanted to know sooner rather than later.

The test was easy enough, all they did was draw some blood samples. I didn't even need to fast beforehand.

Exactly 1 month later, I received an email that contained my official results.   Here's a quick rundown of all the nutrients this test evaluates.
The results list every nutrient above along with your personal results compared to a "reference range."  A reference range is basically comparing your results to thousands of others who've taken the test.  If your results rank lower than thousands of your peers, you are considered deficient.  Your results are represented by a black dot placed on a sliding scale.  The scale is color coded grey, yellow, and green.  Green is the ideal range, yellow means that you're on the borderline and grey represents a deficiency.

When my results came in, I immediately scanned it for obvious deficiencies.  Thankfully, I was only deficient in two nutrients: vitamin D and Folate.  Honestly, I fully expected to be lacking in vitamin D. Most people are low in vitamin D.  Especially if you're a person of color.  I rarely go out in the sun. And when I do, I'm rocking SPF 50 on my face.  The reference range is 50% and I measured 49.  So my deficiency isn't terribly low.  But I still need to take action because vitamin D is responsible for so many functions in the body.  Their recommendation was that I take 2000 IUs daily for vitamin D3 to help get my levels up.

The other deficiency identified was Folate.  This is a B-vitamin (B9) needed to make red & white blood cells.  Folate is often confused with folic acid.  In fact, my first instinct was to go out and buy a bottle of folic acid to fix the issue.  The difference between the two is that folic acid is a synthetic form while folic acid is the naturally derived form of B9.  Similarly to vitamin D, a lot of folks are deficient in folate.  Hence why many food manufacturers add folic acid to bread, flour, and cereal.  Because folic acid is synthetic, it takes the body longer to break down and absorb. This can cause of build-up of folic acid in the bloodstream which might be connected to a higher risk of cancer.  Until this test, I never once thought about getting enough folate.  Heck, I had only heard of folic acid.  I even took a couple of bottles of folic acid a few years ago.  But thanks to this report, I found out that a natural form of folate is available to purchase online.  Judging by some of the reviews, folate helps with a wide range of symptoms from depression to low energy to brain fog so I'm looking forward to supplementing.

Although I was only deficient in 2 vitamins, I landed on the low-borderline range for 9 others.  Several of them were various B vitamins(6, 12, 2).  I suspect this has to do with how little meat I consume.  Fun fact, I was a vegetarian for several years.  But since reintroducing meat back in my diet, I don't really eat much of it.  I don't plan on eating a bunch of meat, instead, I'll focus on incorporating animal products that are considered nutrient dense.

The Effect of These Deficiencies on My Hair & Weight
Surprisingly, I scored low or borderline on several nutrients that support healthy hair.  Folate is one. I also landed on the borderline with pantothenate and zinc.  We also know that vitamin D plays a major role in healthy hair.  Thankfully, I haven't experienced much hair loss.  I think this has something to do with my high amino acid scores.  Although I don't eat a ton of meat, I'm dead serious about my collagen intake.  I think collagen loading has paid off because I scored way above the reference range in nearly every amino acid.  Many of the nutrients I lacked have a connection to maintaining a healthy weight.  I have a few pounds that seem to stick around even with adjustment to my activity level and diet.  I wonder if supplementing to address my deficiencies could be the difference maker.

For every mineral that was low or borderline, I looked online for a list of deficiency related symptoms that correlated.   I wasn't experiencing any deficiency related side effects.  Some would say that's a good thing but since I wasn't experiencing negative symptoms, I wouldn't have known there was an issue until I became severely deficient.

I'm really glad that I made this investment.  After implementing some corrective measures, I plan on doing a follow-up test to see if I'm making a measurable difference in my nutrients levels.  For now, I've purchased a few supplements and plan on enjoying lots of eggs, liver, blackstrap molasses and brewer's yeast in my future.  I did rank highly for most antioxidants.  I'm in the process of figuring out what's contributing to those high scores so I can keep my levels up.

Once my deficiencies are corrected, I plan on applying a strategy that elevates my nutrient markers to optimal levels.  I definitely encourage anyone who doesn't eat a whole foods diet to invest in micronutrient testing so we aren't wasting money on buying random vitamins that you may not need. I want all of us to experience optimal health and I think this is the first step in that journey.  If you're vegan or follow a mostly plant-based diet, this test is a must because eating a plant only diet can lead to various nutrient deficiencies.

There are a bunch of other health-related tests on the market that plan on doing in the future to dig deeper into the functioning levels in my body.  Some, for example, testing my inflammation levels or measuring my cardiovascular health.  This micronutrient test was a great place to start.

Sis, You're Doing Too Much. It's Time to Pick a Regimen.

Ismail oubarka | 4:02 AM
Natural Hair 101 The Basics of Healthy Hair
Put down that product, junkie. It's time to get back to basics.
Sis,

Come on over and sit on Christina's virtual couch. We need to have a talk.

I'm not judging you. I'm not here to chastise you. Everything I'm about to say comes from a place of love. You know that. I just had to keep it a buck — because you and I are the same. And the truth is, for a long time, we've been doing absolutely too much when it comes to our natural hair.

I know, I know.

Being a product junkie is fun. There's a bit of an endorphin kick that comes along with successfully tracking down that new-new. But it's not good for our hair or our wallets — can we touch and agree on that much?

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that in the year of our Lord 2019, we've got to do better. I'm here to see to it that we do.

Love,
Christina

Note: This series was initially supposed to launch April 1st, but after the tragic news of Nipsey Hussle's death, I couldn't in good conscience go on with "business as usual". The first installment of the series will go live Friday, April 5th, and resume on the scheduled 3rd Monday (April 15th).

---

Good Bye, Product Junkie. ✌🏽

I know you guys were thinking that this couldn't possibly be true. That I was playing some sort of April Fools joke on y'all.

But I'm not. This is 137% real.

My stash right before this challenge. Yes, the drawers are full of product, too.
If you saw my last video and blog post about getting my hair cut by Brandie at Be Kekoa, then this should come as no surprise. I didn't shy away from the fact that I ruined my hair by my own hand, and my obsession with product junkie-ing and baking soda is largely to blame.

When I sat my behind in Brandie's chair nearly 2 months ago, we a had a really good talk (after she almost beat my butt, of course) about the current state of my hair since the last time she had seen me. She was straight up with me — sharing that in her opinion (which I wholeheartedly trust), I was using too many products. Too much switching up. Too many brands. Too much inconsistency.

The product junkie in me didn't want to listen, but deep down inside, I knew she was right. Brandie issued me a challenge — to use the same products for 6 months. And while I knew I wasn't ready for that level of commitment, I knew something had to give.

So here we are.

The Challenge
For the next 3 months (as in April, May, and June), I'm committed to using only a specific set of products from a few brands that I hand-picked myself. Because of this, there will be:

✅ NO outside hair product reviews
✅ NO sponsored hair product posts on social media or my blog
✅ NO outside hair product purchases
✅ NO mention of ANY other hair products or brands

I'm not saying that the PJ in me is retired forever, but in order to make this challenge really successful, I've got to put my blinders on. The goal here is consistency. To establish a a routine for my hair. For it to become the best version of itself through consistent care with effective products tailored to my hair texture, type, porosity, and more.

Of course I want all the growth — but health is my #1 priority. Even with my recent cut, there's still some damage I'd like to take care of, and I can't do that with product hoppin'. You're invited to join me on this challenge, but more than anything my hope is that you use this series as an opportunity to examine your own natural hair practices.

That's why I'm also using this series as an opportunity to refresh and update my Curl Care 101 series from 2015. More on that soon.

In this series, I'm ONLY using a hand-selected set of products from Be Kekoa, Soultanicals, and tgin. I'm also incorporating Wetline Xtreme Gel, but not promoting them like that (for obvious reasons, plus they don't need my help). These are the products I'll be using:

Natural Hair 101 The Basics of Healthy Hair
My Be Kekoa regimen products of choice.
Be Kekoa

Soultanicals

Natural Hair 101 The Basics of Healthy Hair
My Soultanicals selections.
tgin

I know these brands. I've worked with these brands for a loooooong time. All three were there at the beginning stages of my natural hair journey, and have supported me enthusiastically. Their products work. I trust their expertise. TLDR: I ride for these three.

I left myself enough options to go between shampooing and co-washing. Protein and moisture. Wash and go's or another style. But the fact remains, I will not deviate from the products shared here. PeriodT. The goal is to demonstrate that with consistency, our hair thrives.

Natural Hair 101 The Basics of Healthy Hair
Taking tgin to task, naturally. Just a few goodies missing!
Back to Basics: Natural Hair 101
Back in 2015 I launched a series aimed at helping transitioners and new naturals navigate the tough terrain of natural hair, called Curl Care 101. That series did really well on my blog in terms of traffic, and for a while, I toyed around with the idea of turning it into an e-book and selling it. Clearly, I changed my mind. Not because I didn't think it would sell, but because trying to hustle off y'all just isn't my vibe.

And truthfully, my God will provide without me tryna sell something that was once free. But that's another story for another time.

With the annoying current trends on Instagram and YouTube focused on clicks, clout, and attention, I feel that a series like this is long overdue. A lot of influencers are focused on securing brand partnership bags, making clickbait covers for Instagram videos, or doing copycats of trends for YouTube — while real, informative, helpful information about natural hair care gets lost in the shuffle.

Forget about rice water. Forget about whatever DIY concoction that's better off served as a chip dip. Walk away from everyone who tries to give you a different kitchen mix to grow your hair every week. Turn your back to XYZ brand that's dropping a new line with 2 whole changed ingredients every 15 minutes.

This ain't about that.

Whether you're newly natural, still transitioning, on the rebound from damage, or a #teamnatural veteran looking to reacquaint yourself with a routine, there's something in this series for everyone.  No, this isn't some challenge where you need to use hashtags and massage your scalp with blessed oils 3x/day in order to randomly win a prize. All I asking is that from the beginning of April through the end of June 2019, you tune in here at maneobjective.com every 1st and 3rd Monday for Back to Basics: Natural Hair 101.

Each week, I'll be breaking down a basic element of healthy natural hair care, sharing the products I'm using, and sharing how I incorporate that element into my haircare regimen. No crazy gimmicks, no clickbait, no shoving #BrandPartner down your throat every 20 minutes. This is just a revamp of a good ol' fashioned series that serves as an important reminder: if you are good to your hair, it will show. Which means, it will grow wonderfully, and you'll be able to retain maximum length, if that is your goal. It will also gain fullness, as breakage and shedding are decreased.

These are the topics you can expect me to cover over the next 3 months:

1. Texture and Typing: Get to Know Your Hair

2. How to Build a Natural Hair Regimen for YOUR Hair Type

3. Wash Day: Detangling, Cleansing Your Scalp, and Promoting Hair Growth While Reducing Breakage & Split Ends

4. The REAL Science of Deep Conditioning

5. Wash n' Go Techniques That ACTUALLY Work

6. Protecting Natural Hair at Night

7. Hair Damage: How to Get Your Bounce Back

I'll also be dropping gems on Instagram and Instagram Stories, so make sure you're following me @maneobjective. Also, make sure you're subscribed to my YouTube channel!

See ya'll for blog post #1 in a few!

Summer Ready// Let's Do a Full Body Microdermabrasion Treatment At Home

Ismail oubarka | 7:09 AM
Over the years, I've developed sort of an obsession with body exfoliation.  Having soft skin all over is an amazing feeling.  Now that warmer weather is approaching, all I can think of is how to slough off the dead skin so my arms, legs, back, and shoulders will glow in the summer sun.

I have a few tricks up my sleeve.  Just the other day, I restocked on my favorite Tree Hut Sugar Scrubs.  I also plan to make good use of the Salux Cloths I've purchased in the past.  I thought I was set.....that is until I learned of a body exfoliation product that may be far superior to everything I own.
Not long ago, I was introduced to a product, via Instagram, that embodies everything I'm looking for to take body exfoliation to the next level.   When I think of the word "exfoliation," one term that comes to mind is microdermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion is the grandfather of facial exfoliation.  Before chemical peels were a major craze, there was microdermabrasion.  In all my years in the skincare game, never have I heard of microdermabrasion for the body.   I didn't know it was a thing until beauty expert Ashely Weatherford let us in on her little secret.

When asked to reveal her go-to body exfoliator, Ashley boldly proclaimed that Crystal Peel Microderm Body Bar was her absolute fave and that she'd scream this from the rooftop until her dying day.  I love a dramatic proclamation of support for a great beauty product. So I was all ears.
I immediately needed to know more about this exfoliating body bar and why she was so obsessed with it.  Don't get me wrong, sugar scrubs are great, but sometimes I wish there was something that provided a more intense exfoliation.

This soap bar contains some of the same crystals used in microdermabrasion machines. It also contains magnesium oxide crystals from the dead sea. The crystals are uniformly dispersed throughout the bar so that it's effective at removing dead skin from start to finish.  If kept dry between each use, the soap can last up to 6 months if used daily. Daily exfoliation pays off in a major way.  When exfoliated my body daily, my skin was beyond smooth and was even toned all over.

When I searched for this crystalized infused bar online, I noticed that it cost nearly $30.00.  At first, I doubted whether I should invest so much in a bar of soap....but then I remembered that microdermabrasion sessions are an investment in softer, smoother skin.....so I did the right thing.

What really convinced me to purchase this skin bar was (1.) Ashley's strong recommendation and (2). The positive reviews on Amazon.
5.0 out of 5 starsSo much better than exfoliating goopy scrub.January 1, 2019My skin changed what feels like overnight and I spent the better part of the last 4 years moisturizing, scrubbing, changing soaps. Nothing helped. Bumps and ingrown hairs on my arms, elbows, thighs, knees. One use with this bar and my skin felt amazing and smooth the way it used to. I follow up with shower oil and find I only need to use the bar once a week. It's not messy like traditional scrubs and not a waste of goop stuck on your hands instead of scrubbing your skin.

*Editor's Note: I love my sugar scrubs but, yes, they do get goopy over time which causes them to lose their effectiveness.*

Apparently, this soap isn't for those with really sensitive skin. I plan to only use it on certain areas like my back and arms.  Perhaps on my legs, if they can tolerate it.  I can not wait to use it after a session in the sauna.  In my opinion, the absolute best time to scrub the body is after a workout, post-sauna or after soaking in a warm bath.  This loosens the dead skin and preps the skin for maximum impact.  Some people in the reviews stated that the soap left tiny scratches. I think this could be avoided if used on skin that's already primed for exfoliation.  They also offer a similar exfoliating bar for sensitive skin just in case.

If the $30.00 price tag turns you off, no worries, they also offer this crystalized soap in a  2 oz trial size for a price that fits nicely within your beauty budget.

Quick Chunky Havana Twists

Ismail oubarka | 4:11 PM

I think one of the main reasons I never do braids or any kind of twist protective styles often is because of the time it takes to get the style done. I did 7 hours once when I was transitioning and I am not afraid to say that I will never ever sit that long in one […]

The Use Of Anti Fungal Cream Miconazole Nitrate As A Hair Growth Aid

Ismail oubarka | 4:11 PM

What is the strangest thing you’ve ever tried for hair growth? In the beginning of my hair journey I was willing to try pretty much anything if it meant added growth. My roommate would give me the side eye every time I came home with a new product. Maybe it’s because I would gush over […]

Level Up // Time to Start Investing In Yourself

Ismail oubarka | 9:16 AM
My mom loves working in her garden.  Every year, she always brings up how she needs to start planting seeds within a certain time frame in order to produce a decent harvest.  Recently, news came out that Rapper 50 Cent could be the beneficiary of hundreds of millions of dollars thanks to his savvy investing strategy.  50 was an early investor in a mattress company now worth a billion dollars.  Curtis Jackson (50's government name), has made a lifetime of investing.  He has a string of successful investments on his resume. He believes in allocating a portion of his money into opportunities that produce a solid return.

I, too, want to become great at investing.  Basically, I want to allocate money and time into endeavors that have a potential payoff.  Investing takes on many forms. Most of us think about investing as buying shares of companies.  Yes, this is a common type of investing, but I want us to expand the definition so the habit of investing can become a regular part of our lives.
It's time to level up! One way to do so is by/http://www.bellemocha.com/2019/02/stop-setting-goals-start-raising-your.html.  Once we've set the bar a little higher, then it's time to invest in ourselves.

A couple of years ago, I watched a Snapchat story of a girl who had perfect skin.  Yes, the filter made her skin look better but I also saw videos of her skin sans filter and it still was just as amazing.  After closing the app, I made the decision once and for all to finally invest in my skin.  That afternoon, I contacted an esthetician and booked a series of micro needling sessions.   It was expensive, it was slightly painful....but at the end of the year, my skin looked completely different.

The investment in my skin produced a nice return.

Last week, I decided it was time to make another investment.  This year marks my 4th year as an entrepreneur.  I watch Shark's Tank and notice that business owners often visit the show to obtain the financial support and business knowledge of experienced investors.  I want to maintain full ownership of my brand while seeking the business knowledge of someone who can help me produce even greater results. How do I do this?  By investing in 1-on-1 coaching.  I'm committed to the process and optimistic that my investment will pay off.

What I love about investing is that you get back much more than you put in.   If I reach the financial results that my coach thinks is possible for my business, the money that I paid this coach is negligible.  Sometimes we only focus on the upfront costs associated with investing. This keeps us from experiencing the potential rewards that await us.

Most of us spend our time and money on things that give us an instant reward, but nothing long-term...and nothing scalable.  We need to start thinking bigger.  What are you doing currently that will pay off months or years from now?

If we aren't investing, we are cannibalizing our resources.  We consume everything that comes in which makes us totally dependent on receiving more.  I have friends who want to leave their jobs but feel trapped because of lack of financial resources.  When financial resources are scarce, we must heavily invest our time into executing tactics that will ultimately pay you back.

Take a look at some of the areas in your life that need your attention.  Should you be investing in:
  • Improving your health/wellness
  • Growing your bank account so you have more financial resources to invest.
  • Invest in improving your personal appearance.
  • Invest in lifestyle improvement strategies (like hiring a maid, setting aside time to prep healthy meals, etc)
  • Purchasing a course, program, or training that offers a skill set that you can monetize.
I want us to be constantly on the lookout for ways to allocate our resources for greater reward.  We have to think about working for our future self.  Start small.  A good place to start is by focusing on how you invest your time.  Incorporate high-value activities into your day that produce desirable results.  Let's create a standard that we're constantly investing and expand our lives.
