Work Hard, Play Hard. The Recipe for a Successful Life?

Ismail oubarka | 7:21 AM
I spent the better part of yesterday binge watching vlogs of a young couple who have a 7 figure net worth.  Their wealth comes from a variety of sources.  He was once a professional extreme sports athlete that drew endorsements from well-known brands. He then went on to launch a successful travel bag company.  She's a high earning influencer with over 1 million followers.

Their daily vlogs share a glimpse of their lifestyle.  I'm sure that most of their audience tune in to see their luxury lifestyle and travel adventures.  I took the opportunity to look for what I call "success clues."  I wanted to find any takeaways that I could apply to my own life.

After watching a few episodes, one thing became evident.  The guy seemed addicted to getting things done.  Being productive kept a huge smile on his face.  By sunrise, he was already at work shooting a sponsored campaign for a major brand.  Later that morning, he staged another photoshoot for his upcoming clothing label. Once that was done, he moved on to tackling yet another thing on his to-do list.

I saw his mood elevate higher with each completed task.  It was a joy to watch. Something magical happens when we tackle our to-do list.  With each accomplishment, we receive a surge of energy and motivation.  Ryan Serhant said, in one of his vlogs,  that when we're feeling productive & motivated, we should ride that wave and get as much done as possible because we don't know when the surge of inspiration will strike again.

That's exactly what I observed in the vlog.  Over an over, he kept referencing how good he felt when he was getting things done.  At one point, he compares his actions to his friend Richard and says, that "he starts to do something and can't stop."  Mind you, Richard's net worth is nearly 1 billion dollars.

At the end of the vlog, the entire gang goes out to enjoy a delicious dinner at the favorite restaurant (that just happens to be owned by Richard).  As I replayed the elements of the video in my head, I realize that if this is a representation of a typical day, it's no wonder that he was able to launch a successful travel gear company and is set to create a thriving clothing brand.  The man is fueled by the desire to experience several accomplishments throughout the day.

Each time we knock out a task from our list of to-dos, its a mini-victory.  With each accomplishment, we move deeper into a state of flow.  If we take Ryan's advice and take advantage of that rush of energy, we'll be shocked at how much we can create in a short time frame.  I love the fact that wrapped up their successful day with a reward.  As you know, I'm a huge fan of using rewards as a way to drive behavior.  Typically, my actions are driven by avoiding negative consequences.  This is not ideal because I don't push myself as hard unless I'm trying to avoid something from bad happening.

Ending your day productive day with a reward is a sure fire way to keep you motivated to repeat it all over again tomorrow.  If you string enough fruitful days together, you'll essentially change the direction of your life.  One last tip.  Many of us are very productive at our jobs but don't keep that same energy when it comes to our personal goals.  If you applied the same drive and determination to the rest of your life that you do on your 9-5, the possibilities would be endless.

I leave you with the video blog that inspired this post so you can see for yourself. Don't get too hung up on the high-end lifestyle, that's just the surface.  Their luxuries represent the manifestation of their personal goals.  Look for the lessons that you can apply to your life and see what happens when your hard works pays off.

How To Band Your Natural Hair For A Heat Free Blowout

Ismail oubarka | 5:52 AM

One of the most common complaints comments that I get from people who are newly natural is that their hair is way too thick. Personally I never really thought of this as a bad thing, flashbacks of my thin relaxed hair constantly reminds me to love my thick coils, kinks and curls and enjoy what […]

A Critical Look At Weaves – Maybe Not So Protective After All

Ismail oubarka | 5:57 AM

I know what you are thinking, another post about how weaves pull on the edges of your hair, causing receding hair lines, or something about how not caring for your hair underneath the weave can cause breakage and irreparable damage etc. You may even have expected pictures of various people who suffer from Traction Alopecia […]

Therapeutic Hobbies That Cost Less Than Your Psychologist

Ismail oubarka | 9:51 AM
*Guest Post Written by SL Thomas of http://BeautyBiche.com

There's no shame in admitting that we don’t feel our best 24-7. Some days we are excited to get up and start the day and other days we can feel our energy level and ability to smile more difficult than it seems. “Smile, it isn’t that bad” someone says. All you're thinking is, 'How can I smile when life keeps throwing me monkey wrenches?' But guess what? Those people are correct. Life really isn't that bad when you think about it because every circumstance is temporary.

After reading multiple self-help articles and quick therapy sessions with psychologists in the office break rooms, I've learned that the best form of therapy is engaging in hobbies that you love. When you do what you love, it takes your mind off of the areas of life that cannot be controlled. That being said here are my top 4 endorphin releasing hobbies that could almost count as therapy.

Jogging
The best thing about jogging is that you're actually outside. So many people will opt into running indoors on a treadmill but honestly jogging outside is way better.
First off, the feeling of the wind blowing on your skin is much more delightful than a steady flow of moist air in the gym. In the gym, you have to contend with unpleasant body odors and that awful feeling of knowing that if you don't wipe down the equipment with an antibacterial wipe before using it, you can possibly contract a bacterial infection.

Yuck!

The second thing about jogging outside is once you set your pace you start to actually breathe. When Which means that you are inhaling the gratitude of life itself and exhaling the irrelevant factors that do not contribute to your overall happiness.
Lastly, once you've increased your oxygen levels by taking large, steady breaths, you feel relieved and happy. You look back only to see how far you have gone and look forward to see how far you can go. These moments are exhilarating! Soon you'll realize that you got this.

Skating
Do you remember being a child skating around your neighborhood or even at the local skating rink? Remember how good it felt to just roll around on the pavement or even the glossy hardwood floors with a full smile planted on your face because you finally balanced yourself enough to turn a corner without falling. The amount of momentum and speed that you could pick up made you want to go even faster.  The risk of tripping and falling was totally worth it. Yes, you were a little frustrated when you did fall but you got up and kept going only to start chuckling underneath your breath as you sped away.
Now imagine doing that as an adult. You’ve had a long and stressful day of catering to others but when you skate all of the anxiety, stress and even the feeling of being a little bit more overweight at this age doesn’t matter. You’re happy, you’re smiling and you’re simply enjoying yourself. I swear it is worth every minute of happiness you may be missing out on.

Not ready to take that chance on rollerskating, that's ok..but you have to eat so try cooking.

Cooking
Good cook, bad cook or mediocre cook. No matter your skill level this therapeutic activity from start to finish will make you wonder why you never thought to do this all along.
Depending on what you are creating the meal prep can be 10 minutes which means that whatever was bothering you will be thought about while you're chopping and measuring.
The second part is the actual cooking which will take you about 20-30 minutes. During those 20-30 minutes, your mind is clear, you've stopped worrying about what happened in the past and what could happen tomorrow. You are focused on the dish itself and you're liking every minute of it. You may even get spontaneous and start to post photos and videos to your Instagram Story because you are so proud of yourself and your new creation.
Once your meal is completed, you inhale the great aroma, and exhale because your dish came out amazing (even if it didn't). You can look down and smile because you created something that will nourish you from within.

Bikram Yoga (Hot Yoga)
This form of yoga is best for those looking to clear their mind, sweat like a leaky faucet, and lose weight. I for one wanted to experience all the benefits of hot yoga 4 years ago and have been going ever since. Bikram Yoga is a form of yoga that involves breathing, stretching both internal and external muscles over the course of 60 or 90 minutes. During that time you guided to do 26 different poses in a 90 or 105-degree room. Yes, that is hot but the instructors emphasize the fact that because the temperature in the room allows for more concentration and flexibility.

The most important part of the entire Bikram yoga class is breathing. If you are not breathing properly, you are not getting the full benefits of the class and you can overheat yourself. The instructors advise you not to leave but to breath. Breathing allows for you to exhale the outside stressors and inhale life and it's many beginnings. You can mentally feel yourself escaping from what happened earlier that day, week or even that month and start to feel at ease. Pose by pose each stressor is being removed as happiness and determination to execute each pose starts to set in. Once the session is over you feel relieved. You feel whole and for the next few days, nothing bothers you. I can honestly say that out of all of the therapeutic activities that release endorphins, this one is my favorite.

There are many of other endorphin releasing therapeutic activities that will get you happy but those are my top 4.  Feel free to explore other hobbies and find one that transforms your emotional state.

7 Tips For Styling Your Toddlers Hair Without Tantrums

Ismail oubarka | 5:57 AM

Like me, you’re the mom of an active (and of course stunningly gorgeous) toddler. She’s energetic, she’s eager to explore life, but if you don’t do something, her hair looks a hot mess. And then you get those looks from your family and friends that say “That women can’t even take care of that poor […]

[style obsession.] The Above Ankle Length Dress

Ismail oubarka | 7:26 AM
A section of my closet is dedicated to a small collection of maxi dresses that I've collected over the years.  For some reason, I'm drawn to them.  Once I find one that fits, I'm pretty much going to buy it.

So now I own a decent amount of maxi dresses that I barely wear. I couldn't figure out why I suddenly lost interest in my beloved dresses...until now.

Most of my maxi dresses are true to their name.  When worn, they practically reach the floor.  I didn't realize until today that my super long dresses are in dire need of a modern makeover.  When I stumbled this street style image of Karrueche, it was like a lightbulb came on.

Karrueche and I are about the same height (5'1).  Being tiny in stature sometimes makes it hard to find clothes that are a perfect fit.  Oftentimes, we have to partner with a tailor so the clothes fit just right.

Recently, Karrueche was spotted enjoying a day out with a friend.  She's wearing a beautiful pattern dress and a stunning pair of heels.  After studying her look for a few moments, I picked up the following insights:

\\The (above) Ankle-Length Dress\\
The reason why I'm no longer in love with my maxi dresses is because they aren't the perfect length.  As a tiny person, floor-length dresses aren't an optimal choice.  Karrueche's dress lands just above her ankles.  Not only is this a more modern length, it also creates the perfect opportunity to highlight your footwear.

\\The Feminine Heel\\
When I wear my long dresses, I typically don't pay too much attention to the shoes I'm wearing. Most of the time, the shoes are barely visible.  But, the (above) ankle-length dress doesn't hide our shoes, it showcases them.  Can we talk about how Karrueche wore an ultra-sexy heel to balance the soft feminine energy of her dress? I love how both her dress and shoes share equal roles as statement pieces of her look.

There are a couple dresses in my closet that would be completely transformed if I were to have them altered to just above ankle length.  This newer, more modern length dress looks beautiful no matter your height.  The above ankle dress hasn't caught on as a trend just yet.  Most online fashion retailers offer midi length (just below the knee) or maxi dresses. Nothing in between.

It's time to explore new lengths. #exposetheankles

Your Hair May Be Low Porosity Not Coarse, Know The Difference?

Ismail oubarka | 5:57 AM

Alright you girls with the low porosity hair strands, that’s enough talk about how lucky you are because your hair is always soft, as a matter of fact you probably only moisturize once a week right? Not all of you are singing that happy tune though, many women with natural or relaxed hair are not […]

Uber: Homage To Janet Jackson

Ismail oubarka | 12:39 PM

We have teamed up with Uber for Janet’s latest single release in a celebratory event held in NYC last week. Around 400 attendees inundated the building with love and admiration for this iconic woman. The ambience was electric and the audience was rewarded with a grand entrance of hand drums and boisterous greetings which paved the way for the icon. We listened to her speak about the music video before premiering it to the attendees and by their exuberant cacophony of cheers it is not difficult to understand why Janet has a home in the hearts of millions. Her lyrics have always spoken to us: Got my own mind/ I want to make my own decisions/ When it has to do with my life, my life/I wanna be the one in control. Lyrics that have been molded by independence, self love, social injustice, heartbreak, overcoming strife, candidness and most importantly women’s empowerment. Not only is Janet an incredible representation of empowerment she has been a source of inspiration; inspiring so many women to unapologetically claim their own empowerment and to stand up and speak out. Uber has been working to exhort those to use their voice in empowering ways. Women’s empowerment, standing up for your beliefs and being vocal on matters that are imperative is an intrinsic part of our work which is why the unyielding mission of Uber to support those who do represent sources of empowerment such as Janet Jackson is a collaboration that really hit home for us. So we pay homage by recreating a few of Janet Jackson’s album covers, classic lyrics and signature moves.

The recession is over, or so they like to say. If that’s the case then why in the world does a sixty dollar jar of product still make my head hurt causing me to reach for some Tylenol with the quickness? To be frank, I believe that paying that much money for a hair product […]

Heat: Proof That It Takes Your Deep Conditioning Sessions To A New Level

Ismail oubarka | 5:55 AM

I am definitely in a deep conditioning rut, most of my sessions involve some kind of lazy pre poo, no heat, and a whole bunch of hours all the while using an active six month old as my excuse. Personally even though I feel bad about not using heat as often as I should, I […]
