SARIAH IS NATURALLY GLAM!

Ismail oubarka | 5:56 AM

My name is Sariah Nicole and I am from Atlanta, Georgia. I am a student at Georgia Southern University. My hair journey was not planned but it was the best thing that has ever happened to me.

How long have you been natural?
I will hit three years on November 22nd.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?
What motivated me to transition was that one time after I had gotten a perm, I noticed that my scalp was different. It was very sensitive with red blotches almost everywhere and shortly after that, I noticed blood coming out of them. I knew that this was the result of the perm and my hair was in its worst state. So I did my research on how to revive my heat damaged and over processed hair and it was all pointing to one direction, which was to stop putting heat on my hair and to ultimately stop getting perms. I transitioned my hair for a year and a half. I chose to transition because I wasn’t as comfortable sporting shorter hair styles at the time.

How would you describe your hair?
I would describe my hair as a reflection of me. I do not strive for “perfection.” Instead I go for the best that I (it) can be. I do not obsess about how frizzy my styles are or how wild it is because it is what makes me unique and I am okay with however it looks because I know that I tried my best. I am more concerned with its healthiness.

What do you love most about your hair?
I love that my hair requires low maintenance. In the summer my wash n go’s can last up to a whole week and in the winter my twist outs and braid outs can last just as long. I also love that my hair retains moisture very well.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
The most memorable part of my journey was when I was about three months into transitioning and I broke down and got a perm because it was not “manageable.” I regretted my decision because my scalp had become unhealthy again.

What were some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
Some of my favorite transitioning hairstyles were braids, braid outs, and bantu knot outs. My current do’s are wash n go’s, blow outs, braid outs, and twist outs.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
A lot of my family members would tell me that my hair would be “nappy” and that it would be unhealthy. This really got to me because people still think that having “nappy” hair is a negative thing. To be honest I was a little disappointed when I noticed that my new growth was curls, I was expecting to be naptural. But I realized that we have to make the best out of what we are given.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
My summer hair regimen is strictly wash n go’s because of all of the humidity my braid outs or twist outs won’t last. Also it is very low maintenance since I am in college and working I do not exactly have a lot of time to twist my hair. I co-wash my hair twice a week with Aussie “Moist” conditioner. Every time I co wash I deep condition with Herbal Essence’s “Honey I’m Strong” and put olive oil on top of the conditioner and sleep with it in overnight. I then rinse it out in the morning with cold water. Then I put Argan Oil Ego Styler gel, coconut oil, and whatever leave in conditioner I am currently feeling. It is usually by OGX( Organix). And I air dry.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?
Some of my favorite Youtuberss and blogs are Glamtwinz334, ForeverFLAWLYSS, Naptural85, and of course Globalcoutoureblog.net.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
I want readers to know that natural hair requires trial and error with products and techniques. Keep trying and be patient when experimenting with new hair things.
