Honey dipper in a honey jar
Have you heard about the benefits of using honey on your hair? Not only is honey sweet, it has a variety of helpful uses. It’s considered an antioxidant and even has a healing effect on wounds, burns, and infections.
For hair it can help with a number of issues such as thinning, balding or adding sheen to dull hair. I love it because it’s a humectant that does a superb job of locking in moisture and making my hair soft. An easy way to include honey in your hair regimen is with this moisturizing hair spritz.

Here’s what you need:

1/2 cup water (you can always add more later)
1/2 cup aloe vera gel
1 tsp honey
2 or 3 drops of the essential oil of your choice. (I like to use Rosemary, Peppermint or Lavender)

Here’s what you do:

Combine ingredients in spray bottle. Mix well. Apply to hair as needed.
You can keep this spritz in the fridge for a few days, don’t keep for more than a week.

DIY Rose Water Anti-Frizz Hair Mist

Spring brings blooming flowers, beautiful days and sunny moods. This Rose Water Hair Spritz is the DIY way to get all that Springtime goodness into a small bottle. Each ingredient is beneficial to hair (and skin) while also having the added benefit of being easy to find.

Benefits

Rose Water improves blood circulation, promotes hair growth and boosts the health of your scalp and hair. It has conditioning properties which revitalize hair while also controlling dandruff and inflammation.
Glycerin is a humectant which means it attracts and retains water from the surrounding environment. When used properly it has the effect of keeping hair moisturized as it draws moisture from the air to the hair shaft. It helps natural hair retain moisture without clogging pours or weighing hair down. Glycerin also helps define curls and keep frizz at bay.
Argan oil has the ability to penetrate the hair shaft, which enhances the elasticity of hair. This also helps nourish your strands from the inside out. Argan oil has Omega 3 and 9 fatty acids that help strengthen hair. It is also a good source of Vitamin E and is packed with natural anti-oxidants.
Rose Water Anti-Frizz Spritz
2 Tablespoons Pure Rose Water
2 Tablespoons Distilled Water
2 Tablespoons Vegetable Glycerin
2-3 Drops Argan Oil
*Combine ingredients in a small spray bottle and shake well. Use daily to revitalize hair.
While this spritz is great for your hair, it can also be good for your senses. The scent of rose is known to have a calming effect. That means you get a dose of aromatherapy with every spray. So mix and spray away!

SARIAH IS NATURALLY GLAM!

Ismail oubarka | 5:56 AM

My name is Sariah Nicole and I am from Atlanta, Georgia. I am a student at Georgia Southern University. My hair journey was not planned but it was the best thing that has ever happened to me.

How long have you been natural?
I will hit three years on November 22nd.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?
What motivated me to transition was that one time after I had gotten a perm, I noticed that my scalp was different. It was very sensitive with red blotches almost everywhere and shortly after that, I noticed blood coming out of them. I knew that this was the result of the perm and my hair was in its worst state. So I did my research on how to revive my heat damaged and over processed hair and it was all pointing to one direction, which was to stop putting heat on my hair and to ultimately stop getting perms. I transitioned my hair for a year and a half. I chose to transition because I wasn’t as comfortable sporting shorter hair styles at the time.

How would you describe your hair?
I would describe my hair as a reflection of me. I do not strive for “perfection.” Instead I go for the best that I (it) can be. I do not obsess about how frizzy my styles are or how wild it is because it is what makes me unique and I am okay with however it looks because I know that I tried my best. I am more concerned with its healthiness.

What do you love most about your hair?
I love that my hair requires low maintenance. In the summer my wash n go’s can last up to a whole week and in the winter my twist outs and braid outs can last just as long. I also love that my hair retains moisture very well.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
The most memorable part of my journey was when I was about three months into transitioning and I broke down and got a perm because it was not “manageable.” I regretted my decision because my scalp had become unhealthy again.

What were some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
Some of my favorite transitioning hairstyles were braids, braid outs, and bantu knot outs. My current do’s are wash n go’s, blow outs, braid outs, and twist outs.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
A lot of my family members would tell me that my hair would be “nappy” and that it would be unhealthy. This really got to me because people still think that having “nappy” hair is a negative thing. To be honest I was a little disappointed when I noticed that my new growth was curls, I was expecting to be naptural. But I realized that we have to make the best out of what we are given.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
My summer hair regimen is strictly wash n go’s because of all of the humidity my braid outs or twist outs won’t last. Also it is very low maintenance since I am in college and working I do not exactly have a lot of time to twist my hair. I co-wash my hair twice a week with Aussie “Moist” conditioner. Every time I co wash I deep condition with Herbal Essence’s “Honey I’m Strong” and put olive oil on top of the conditioner and sleep with it in overnight. I then rinse it out in the morning with cold water. Then I put Argan Oil Ego Styler gel, coconut oil, and whatever leave in conditioner I am currently feeling. It is usually by OGX( Organix). And I air dry.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?
Some of my favorite Youtuberss and blogs are Glamtwinz334, ForeverFLAWLYSS, Naptural85, and of course Globalcoutoureblog.net.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
I want readers to know that natural hair requires trial and error with products and techniques. Keep trying and be patient when experimenting with new hair things.

Where can people find you for more information?

FARAH IS NATURALLY GLAM!

Ismail oubarka | 5:45 AM

By: curlynikki
Tell me about yourself!
Hello fellow naturals! My name is Farah, and I am from New York. I'm currently in graduate school at Columbia University School of Social Work. My passion lies in having a career regarding international relations, but along the way I devote myself to promoting the beauty of natural hair, being an open book to those who are curious about natural hair, and being a mini fashionista.

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
My mother was the first to transition back to natural after just cutting her permed hair into a cute bob style. She told me about all these famous youtubers she researched and she was ready to go natural. I thought she was crazy for restarting, until she began rocking her cute fro. I transitioned for around a year during my undergraduate career, wearing braid extensions that my mom put in for the first time until spring/summer. It was low maintenance and really allowed me to not have to worry about the differing textures. During the summer, I couldn’t take it anymore and I hacked the perm ends off!

Had you always embraced your texture?
I’ve always loved my hair texture and only permed to try something new for high school.

How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural? What was your response to them?
Everyone loves my natural hair and can’t get enough of it! Those who saw me with a perm and then switch to natural prefer my natural hair. Most of my friends who didn’t know about black hair care were also curious, which I gladly taught them about the stigma behind natural hair, its history and maintenance.

Describe your hair (fine or coarse, thin or thick, highly porous, low, etc.)
My hair is honestly very bipolar! When wet it’s wavy/ringlets, when dry, it straightens and fluffs out (I can never do a wash and go or even have great 2nd day hair). It is fine strands and thick with greater concentrated thickness in the back center of my head.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to your hair?
During school, I decided to add a hair feather to my hair because of a free event. Long story short, to take it out I had to hack off a side of my hair and had a mini freak out because of all hair I just lost!

What’s your biggest hair related regret?
During undergrad, I went to the University of Vermont, and the air was so dry and brittle it caused a lot of hair breakage due to me wanting to wear my hair out all the time. I believe to prevent breakage and to maintain healthy hair I should have worn more protective styles or even braid extensions. I had to do another mini big chop to my hair last year due to all the split ends.

What's your current hair routine? How often do you wash, condition, and style? Favorite products! Deets!
I prepoo, wash, detangle and deep condition once a week using Aussie Moist Conditioner and Shea Moisture Deep Conditioning Masque mixed with a ton of different oils. I am starting to realize my hair loves water more than I thought so when it needs a quick moisture rinse I dunk my head in water and re-moisturize. After I wash my hair I normally stretch it. I began using rollers for stretching and loosely roll them to maintain a stretched but non-straightened look. I use my homemade mango butter to seal and style with Curls Pomeade Passion Fruit Control Paste for hold. I also am currently experimenting with Miss Jessie’s Multicultural Curls since the test run went so well! I usually wear my hair in protective styled updo and wear my hair out only once or twice a week if possible.

What’s your favorite hairstyle? Where do you get hairstyle inspiration?
My favorite style is a 3 strand twist out, it leaves my hair big and fluffy and the definition lasts! I also love mini braids but they are a terror to take out. I am definitely a youtube/instragram/google fiend, so I find and interpret styles from the Internet then alter them to suit me.

Who is your curl crush?
My ultimate curl crush is Napturals85!

How do you maintain your hair at night?
I usually braid my hair up or try to preserve my protective style and sleep with a satin scarf and pillowcase.

How do you maintain healthy length?
I think deep conditioning, incorporating more water rinsing, and low to no maintenance styles have helped.

What's the best thing about being natural?
I love the natural beauty and the unlimited styling that natural hair encompasses as well the unification of communities that have been created for the support of natural hair.

MYKEL IS NATURALLY GLAM!

By : curlynikki
Tell me about yourself!
My name is Mykel, and the arts are my life. I am currently in the progress of getting a degree in Theatre. I look at every apect of life as an art form, which is why I love hair/fashion.

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
Both! I transitioned for about a year. When my new growth reached about three-four inches, I did the chop. My journey has been pleasant and surprising so far. I did not expect to enjoy caring for my hair the way I am enjoying it.

Had you always embraced your texture?
Yes. Curly hair has always intrigued me. I am in love.

How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural? What was your response to them?
They are all for it. Majority of my family members are natural. I love being able to talk hair talk with them.

Describe your hair (fine or coarse, thin or thick, highly porous, low, etc.)
My hair is a mixture of 4a, 4b, and 4c. It is “thick city” on top of my head. It ranges from fine to coarse. It can get really dry and tangled quickly if I do not keep it moisturized daily. I am still learning my hair.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to your hair?
Uhhh, colored it. Why did I do that? I have no idea.

What’s your biggest hair related regret?
I regret coloring it, really. The color is pretty, but I think my hair would be much further along if I hadn’t have colored it. Once you color it, you get addicted to coloring it. Meh.

What's your current hair routine? How often do you wash, condition, and style? Favorite products! Deets!
I cowash once a week and deep condition once a week. My routine changes depending on my hair’s needs. I use shampoo only once a month. The rest of the month, I use the Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse and my favorite Tresemme Naturals (old formula) Conditioner. So far, the Shea Moisture products are my fave.

What’s your favorite hairstyle? Where do you get hairstyle inspiration?
My favorite hairstyle is my high puff. I experiment with styles a lot, so I guess it’s safe to say I inspire myself.

Who is your curl crush?
Omg, Jess aka MahoganyCurls. I slowly developing a hair crush on Taren Guy, too.

How do you maintain your hair at night?
At night, I pull it up in a high bun if I am stretching it for the next day. Sometimes, I just twist it.

How do you maintain healthy length?
I am in the process of slowly cutting off my color, so I can’t really say.

What's the best thing about being natural?
The best thing about being natural is being free and understanding that my hair does not make me the person I am.

Is This Hair For Play or To Stay?

Ismail oubarka | 5:22 AM

I recently did a hair change just for fun, nothing drastic or permanent. Just a lil something’ different to spice it up for my birthday. I still wanted my hair to look and be natural, but I decided to give corkscrew curls a test run. You know, the type of curl I had delusions of growing when I first went natural. Ha!

Right after getting extensions.

Of course I cleared it with my agent first and assured them that this hair change was only for some birthday fun and I would have the sew-in removed after about two weeks, but here is where things took a turn.
I did indeed get the corkscrew curls I wanted to rock for my birthday and  I did indeed rock them to the fullest. But surprisingly, when I went to my agency to show my bookers what it looked like, they actually loved it! So now, they want me to keep this look for a while. I guess that’s not bad… it’s just unexpected.

My shrunken, 3 day old twist-out,
 1 day before extensions

I haven’t worn extensions in so long, it definitely feels a little weird to think this look might be sticking around for a while. Although I love the current look, I love my own natural hair too and even more, being able to touch my freakin’ scalp when I want to!
There’s no doubt that I make my own decisions, but when it comes to having a successful modeling career, it’s a team effort. It’s also important to be flexible or open minded (within reason) about how clients want to see you. I trust my agency and my team enough to value their ideas and opinions. So folks, it appears that what I thought was for play, is here to stay…at least until a client request I take it out.
What do you think? Do you like the new look? Do you think it can’t hurt to give it a try? Or do you prefer the look of my real hair? Be honest, but be nice!!!
